This dilemma is very real especially for those stationed in Austin Texas. Not so much of an issue in Northern VA. I personally have always lived beneath the allotted basic allowance for housing and pocketed as much as $1500. But please understand that BAH is for ALL expenses and not just rent. So military members need to understand that while your BAH may be $3200 for a higher ranking member in a high cost area, you’re better off finding rent for $1000 less so you can pay for your utilities and all various costs of maintaining a home. Secondly, don’t buy a home because there’s no rental inventory. Many military move very frequently, some every two years! Not everyone needs to be a real estate investor. Many like the mindset and that’s okay 👌. If you’re one of these, you could lose a LOT of money. I invest where it makes sense and live where I want and these two more often than not, aren’t in the same neighborhood. Now that said, if you’re a savvy investor which most military members are not, you can buy a house every two years with every permanent change of station. But in order to do that, we need to think like an investor from day one and not decide to buy aa home due to lack of rental inventory. That’s not how you want to become an investor.

My personal rule is do not confuse what you want with what you desire. It's amazing how much stuff doesnt bring you joy when you do this. Like the food we clear out from our fridge each week still packaged My two pennies worth.👍
