Since the mechanic is *really* not obvious and game doesn't tell you about it: To Uptie your characters and look at their skills you need to hold down on their portrait at the "Sinners" menu. Upties are really important since they unlock new skills and passives, while also upgrading the skills that sinners already have. Characters being uptied or not can be the difference between barely scraping by and completely dunking on all available content. It also makes base characters really good since they get uptied for free at the end of chapters. Base sinners are actually just really good, you can beat the entire available story content with them without much issue
