And this is the reason why your Phram, walmart, store brand filters should not be used. Even Napa doesn't use brand I had a video of a cut open experiments we did in a class at BOCES when I taught autoshop for a year. The Phram filter was the worst, we found 3 filters over the course of the half year semesters that the seam on the media was not sealed, the metal clip was not positioned correctly but still crimped on. It happens with every manufacturer but the improperly manufactured ones should NEVER get past Quality Control. Then there is the carboard endcaps that disintegrate when they get saturated, the metal strap spring instead of coil spring that holds the media in place, and the lack of a quality anti-drainback valve, and inconsistent bypass pressures. Most vehicle and engine manufacturers have a vested interest in the product lasting so they are not as likely to skimp on the value of the products or manufacturing techniques. It cost more for the engine than it does the filter. However, sadly in the USA manufacturers this practice is severely lacking based on the shit rolling off the lines. The aftermarket filter manufacturers have a vested interest in making money. Manufacture it cheaper, sell it for more. Gimmicks like "hand grips" and "Extra" are not included on most quality OEM filters, they use the money one the quality not the frills. As far as USA manufacturers of OEM filters there are not many. Mann owns Wix and Purolator brands, and they are very good quality. I never use much of any of the other brands.
On closed cooling stern drive boats if you put to much concentrated antifreeze in will it overheat? All passages are clean new pump risers manifolds but temp is 170 this year intead of 160. Stat is new too. 80 ocean. That`s the only thing i can think of. Also guage and sensor new too.
Mann are making filters for vp 😉 so on newer vp engines Mann is “original” since vp is a branded Mann at a higher cost. Good video👍 generally you will change filters long before maximum hours on them, if not are running them commercial.
Thanks very much for that well done, I have two D6s that need to be cleaned soon so great info. Have been looking for this for the last few months bring on part two 😎
Hi Fran. Thanks for interest. In the coming months we have a lot more videos planned, including a strip down of a D6 aftercooler. Keep your eyes on the channel.
Not trying to knock you down so to say but these are my observations, I know as you do that Volvo really doesn't manufacture oil filters they contract the production thur a manufacture of filters to their specifications just like any other vehicle manufacturer, I would like to know the brand name of the aftermarket filter cause you as I we both know that there is a great amount of quality differences between all the aftermarket filters and with that there are some really great quality aftermarket filters on the market but for a cost, they are not the cheap ones. My last observation is the strength of the by-pass spring, why you state the OEM Volvo spring is a bit weaker this may or may not be a good thing, good for cold start ups but bad for when the filter starts getting restricted, at this point there will be more unfiltered oil circulating in the engine . I agree that the OEM filter has 25 to 30 percent more surface area which may be the reason for the weaker spring but if the oil and filter are not changed on a regular basis then the filter will become plugged up and start by-passing. This was an interesting video.
Point one Volvo do not make oil filters Point two you don’t say who made the “after market filter” don’t blame you because of liable laws but not all after market filters are the same. Some are very good, some I wouldn’t touch
Hi John. You are correct, Vp dont manufacture filters, however the filters they source as “oem” are manufactured to their high specification. In the next video i will be looking at a fuel filter for the same engine series and will be comparing to a different manufacturers filter. Appreciate your comments.
