Documenting all the wild car projects we come across, the question isn't "why didn't it work?" the question is; "why did it ever work?"

I wonder what speed is too fast is for one of those? An old Mercury two stroke six cylinder outboard engine would be a screamer.

WOW, I thought sure that the tranny was synchronized. You shift really well. Even my car to this day, I shift using the engine speed to shift. Either down or up. Between each gear, is about 500 rpm.'s. So watching the tach, you can make a shift without any notice of a jerk.

the tires are 6.70-15 made by american classic, bias ply construction. I'm nearly positive we threw out the old cylinders, they were in very rough shape

@@bailoutgarage1249Thanks. There are a couple of radial sizes that are supposed to be replacements for the 6.70-15's. 205/75/R15 and 225/75/R15. All four of my tires are flat and I just was some cheap tires to lift the car up and to be able to roll it. I see some trailer tries would match and for $55 seem like they'd do the trick. It will be some time till I have a trial run. I really, really enjoy your videos. They help out a lot. I was pleasantly surprised you have a new one. Hope more on on the way soon. Let me clear up a few things, please. 1. Around 1:57 you said fires in cars with air cleaners on updraft carburetors are "common". Air cleaner fires are not common for updraft carburetors. Model A Zenith carburetors have a weep hole for gan to drip out the bottom instead of into the air cleaner. Most people never check to see if that is plugged. 2. Around 5:53 you said a Model A engine is only good for about 20,000 miles between "major services". Model A motors do not require "major service" (rebuild) every 20,000 miles. I have seen most babbit bearing motors go 70K or more. Inserted Model A motors can go well over 100K before rebuild. I personally have Model As with way more miles than that on them with nothing more that routine maintenance. 3. Around 7:50, you mentioned that you use racing oil because of the zinc (I believe you mean ZDDP). Model A's do not need ZDDP. They were designed and built well before ZDDP additives were added to motor oils. With that said, ZDDP certainly won't hurt the Model A, but not necessary. 4. Congratulations on the 2nd place win! It is a nice car and well deserving. Sounds like you're spinning the stock 6 volt starter on 12 volts. Just be aware that is really hard on starters and ring gears. All the best to you, and thank you from a fellow Model A guy.

With all due respect, these are the realities of a 90 year old car used in a modern way. I'm not going to argue with you as there are many different beliefs about how old cars are to be treated and serviced. This is how I do it. Have fun with your air cleaner fires

TLDR
@CBUSMC
@CBUSMC 10 месяцев назад
First you do not want to use multiweight oil in a vintage car. They will be too thin at operating temp. The 20-50 rating is overstated. These cars were designed for straight weight oil. We use Valvoline racing because it still has zinc in it. Contrary to what Paul Shinn said (BTW he is a reporter, not a mechanic or a machinist; a kind of self declared expert), the racer's bible to engine overhaul is written by A. Graham Bell, a British world renowned race engine builder) and he will explain why zinc is favorable regardless the vintage. We are restorers here, and engine rebuilders here, having overhauled at least 200 engines of all makes and vintages over a 20 year period, with never a comeback. We operate on proven technology, not myth. Paul needs to substantiate his arguments with proven references, which he has never done. Paul is merely trying to get his viewer count up so as to pad the income he is getting from RU-vid. We actually re-overhaul engines here that other 'rebuilders' have messed up bad, including right now a Pontiac 455. A knowledgeable look at the profile of a Model A or Model B cam will demonstrate the incredible peaks of the cam lobes, without any kind of ramp, unlike a modern cam. These pointy cams need all the lube they can get. In this shop, we build cars and trucks for the purpose of touring. We do not build 'ice cream' cars. For Model As in particular, we build using a high compression head at 6.1 CR, oversized intake valves, Model B cam grinds (Bill Stipe), insert bearings, electronic dizzy, and Overdrive. Our cars can and do 65 mph all day long on I-30 and I-35 and have gone 400 miles to Kansas and back on the Interstate in one weekend, and 300 miles to Galveston and back on the Interstate with no issues at all. The super nice fact of electronic dizzy is that every single cylinder fires at the exact same time in the cycle as all the rest, something a points dizzy cannot do. So the engine runs smoother. We hardly expect a reporter to understand the technology behind the features we incorporate. Furthermore, these Model A blocks are nearly 100 years old and nearly worn out totally. You can forget about anyone doing proper babbitt today as was done in yesteryear. The Model A Ford is the most restored vintage car on the planet. Thus when Terry Burtz was finally able to get a properly manufactured 5-main bearing fully pressure oiled block to market, we all rejoiced. Well, almost all of us. He had tried like the dickens to get this casting accomplished at at least 2 USA foundries and none of them could haul the freight. So he resorted to an offshore foundry, with very modern measuring equipment good to millionths of an inch. A machine shop local to Paul Shinn with rudimentary measuring equipment claimed the design specs were off. Terry Burtz requested that Paul return the block for analysis, which Shinn refused to do. Then Burtz gave Paul a list of 4 machine shops that he knew could do proper measuring. The one selected, Hanover, produced a report and video stating the measurements were up to spec. Miraculously, Shinn refused to air that report on his RU-vid channel. Really!!!??? Can't take the heat, Shinn?? So in the process of trying to boost his RU-vid viewer volume to gain more proceeds from RU-vid (bet you didn't know that You Tube pays hi-volume producers, did you), Shinn has maligned a very qualified engineer and a very qualified modern Model A replacement block to the detriment of the entire hobby. Paul, can YOUR Model As do 65 MPH all day long? Or do the cars in the background of your channel just represent hollow cars that are never used? Do they have Mitchell OD? Do YOU have AC which REQUIRES 12 volts system? Can YOU explain how you can get the 4th decimal place from a vernier caliper without asking someone how to do it? Do you know what a vernier caliper is? Do you own a vernier caliper? Have YOU personally overhauled at least 200 engines of all makes and sizes in your shop? And guaranteed every one? This response never would have been generated if you had not decided to tear apart the highly successful Model A Ford project that is one of our shops' exemplary builds. Evidently you did not notice in our channel that we also build race cars.....Shame on you. All under the guise of wanting to "clear up a few things" We await your reply. We also invite you to visit our shop where we can teach you a thing or two....or would you be fearful of such a challenge producing an undesirable RU-vid video. We can support every action we take here with documented engine building specifications....can you? Frankly many of us on this end see you as a Narcissist, meaning only out for your own gratification
