Reading her book was just a mind blowing experience. I read ever word like it was some sort of revelatory scripture of another religion that felt like it could solve all our problems. I still think her urban farming changed a lot of how people think about "gardening" in the city. I just wish the "powers that be" would have had more vision for what supporting and creating a lot of urban farms could mean to a good quality life for everyone there. I still think it's a brilliant solution decades ahead of its' time. Bravo, Novella!! A true hero of mine!!

I had the privilege of taking a few of her courses at Cornell. This person can FEEL. Every fiber of her being is empathy and every sentence you wrote for her in a piece, she would absorb as her own experience. I think that is her super power that made her a great writer.

I was hoping/waiting for a reference to the evolution of articulate speech (FOXP2 gene) in his discussion of human intentionality. Hard to imagine development of human cooperation or transfer of knowledge between generations without articulate speech.
Here's another pseudo academic associate professor at Cal who thinks by wearing wears American Indian ear rings entitles her be a member of my tribe. Sorry, I've seen this disguise before many times by white Anglo women in academia, to make her look "Indian". Furthermore, she has the audacity to claim she's a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes. Maybe they gave her honorary membership? Its anyone guess who she knows in my tribe. Imagine paying $38,696 a year for tuition, fees plus room and board to have your son or daughter sit through a lecture given by this farce. No shame in these academic Anglo frauds. He seems to ignore what happens in the long run, AFTER capitalism has been introduced. As we've seen the past decade since this talk and his predictions -- just because average daily income goes up dramatically does't mean much if capitalists use natural and other disasters to jack up the material costs of living even more than that.
He is ignorant of that the ‘communism’ he says has been a total failure he and those that toe that line conflate authoritarian rule with so-called communism. He is ignorant of worker-owned cooperatives that are definitely profit oriented, but within the context that the interests of worker-owners is absolutely not the same as capitalist- board of directors - stock owned companies.
Should I be shocked ? surprised? that he doesn’t connect capitalism’s historical successes with the tremendous manifestation of predatory capitalism and its attendant nationalist imperialism as demonstrated by the USA. Is the growing vast gap between the super wealthy and the shrinking of the wealth of the so-called middle and lower class going to end happily ever after? Maybe for the super rich. He thinks that sensibility managed capitalism will save us for the awesomeness of the greed and the lust for being the most powerful and the most wealthy. Oh, and continue to make the world in (our) own image. He believes the capitalism can be infected with morality. Methinks the evidence demonstrates that that’s a heavy pipe dream.

Evolutionary Theory has not in any way receded. Look at the collapsing enthusiasm for ID and Creationism? Those deficient bastions of broken theology and pseudo science have contributed nothing at all to scientific endeavour since the entire creationist paradigm was toppled in Geology, Biology and Astronomy over 150 years ago. ID has zero application and zero prediction capacity. It exists as, at best, a thought game. What it really was meant to be was creationism by deception. It has changed along the way, but remains yet a useless pretence. Why? well, basic to science is the process of trying to break the hypothesis - but they can't or won't conceive of any test to do so. So, until such a time- ID remains a non science. But creationism- is already scientifically broken. Shards of a smashed ideology that existed not even as a hypothesis nor theory, but a set of assumptions based on a cultural paradigm. The Young Earth- disproven. Broken and shattered, the evidence against this nonsense has left it as nothing more than ambit claims by pseudo- science and its followers. The global flood. This piece of nonsense is nothing but a hopeful collection of clams on hills, Chinese characters lied about and a pretence that mythology equals global reporting and that the counter evidence that disproved the claim is "interpretation". But the big one is the claim of special creation of kinds. Creationists are forced to lie, repeatedly, about the fossil record, compared genomes, sequenced ancient genomes and geo biology to try and account for a nonsense belief set that has failed to the point of disproof. Common ancestry is not in doubt, nor is the process of evolution. Their task is to misdirect the followers to have them think that the Theory of Evolution is a theory about whether or not evolution happens. That is a huge lie. The Theory is about how it happens, there is no doubt at all that it does happen.
I want to highlight so I can return to this: 27:04 "to really try to cultivate what I think of as ecological compassion for the personhood of other beings." Ecological Compassion in particular. Can't wait for the book! I'll get my hands dirty getting to know some plant beings in the meantime
Viewing this from 2022, the relationship between density and voting supports fraud. It's obviously easier to impact more votes in dense areas than in sparse ones. It's the old saw, "why to you rob only banks? because that's where the money is."
Her story tells of two brothel workers, and the interviewer asks if that part of the story is based on truth. She says she researched it and only found evidences of brothels in the Seattle area. Truth is, the Wenatchee Hotel built in 1910 became a 3-story brothel in the 1930s My wife and I lived in the building for five years… another fascinating story!
