Hi! Any general-purpose potting mix will work just fine for Begonia maculata --- it doesn't need anything special or fancy. Leaf curl is typically an indicator of stress --- it can be showing you it's a little dry, that it got a little too hot or too cold, or other stressors could be at play. Unfortunately, it's one symptom that can have different causes. Hope this helps? If not, or you'd like more info, please email our Care Team at Questions@CostaFarms.com and they'll be happy to dig in deeper if you give them photos and more details about your plant.
I got one from Lowes in a self watering pot. Within a couple of weeks of bringing it home, it dropped all its leaves. Is it known for doing that? Will the leaves grow back or did I get a lemon?
Sorry to hear! Sadly, that's not the usual experience, so there's likely some stressor going on. The plant may recover and push out new leaves; it depends on what the cause of the stress was and how badly it was stressed. (Unfortunately, any number of factors can cause leaf loss, so there's no way to say for sure what happened based on that information.) If you'd like our Care Team to see if they can potentially help diagnose this, reach out at Questions@CostaFarms.com with more background (the condition of the Xanthosoma at the store, the conditions/care you gave it, if the leaves changed color before dropping, etc.) and they'll do their best to help figure out out---and give you a sense of whether it may grow back.
I got one of these and only watered it twice in a month because i didnt want to overdo it. I even put a fan on it the second time because i was nervous about water collecting at the crown. 2 days later, it had fuzzy fungus and crown rot. I have 4 leaves left after pulling the rest off, treating with peroxide, repotting, and those 4 look like theyre rotting at the crown too. This is SO disappointing because its such a unique plant.
As a wholesale grower, we can only ship to stores that buy from us. And sadly, we currently have very few retail partners in California. (Though our Sales team is always looking to get new business!)
