I started working on Ondine when I turned 15. Eventually got the technical components worked out in a year. But didn’t get the interpretation down until 15 years later. Still working on Gaspard…I’m now 63 and every time I bring something new and this suite teaches me new things.
I knew my instructor was very talented, but I had no idea HOW talented until he showed me a copy of an old VHS tape showing him performing this for his college recital. I feel almost embarrassed playing early Chopin nocturnes in front of him.
I had a very very similar Ehrbar upright when i was young - probably still the most beautiful soulful thing I ever owned. The sound on yours brought it back to me. That piano makes you want to compose.
This is my favourite rendition of this piece! I love Zimmerman's wonderful piano and Karajan's magnificent orchestra, especially his strong brass sounds. Brilliant brass sounds of 3rd movement is the greatest point of this piece. I really appreciate you uploading this :)
Zimerman's recordings are generally well-behaved and not overly aggressive and at standard tempo. This sounds a bit different from his usual recordings lol, his fourth movement is so intense but definitely not vulgar!
His studio recordings are like that (he is a perfectionist in that regard, almost to a fault), but his live playing is generally regarded as more spontaneous.
