Tested out perfectly the next day. I really lucked out not hitting a wall, a glass window, and mostly not hitting a person. I suppose I could have ditched in the river as well. In fact it slammed into a shrub . . . and there are few of them at that location right next to Trump Tower
Charles, it looks like you recovered your drone. I hope that's the case, anyway. You happened to be flying in one of the worst airspace conditions for drones in Chicago. All the buildings along the river have strong wi-fi interference in addition to limiting the GPS galaxy horizon to overhead only. When you lock into 12 satellites near one building you can lose 5 of them before you move laterally toward the next if two or more buildings come between the drone and the horizon.
As I mentioned in a facebook reply, I set myself up for a double hit: electronic interference and satellite interference. Came out pretty unscathed. Didn't ditch in the river. Didn't hit a stone or glass wall (actually slammed into shrubs). And most thankfully, didn't hit any people. And there doesn't seem to be any major damage to the drone. Not going to press my luck further
Hey Charles! I love the contrast you did with the gothic architecture of the spire against the modern white buildings. Did you shoot this in 24fps? I usually shoot these types of scenes in 60fps slow motion. It smooths out the micro movements of the drone camera and slows down vehicles to a point to where they’re a little less distracting. Beautiful colors too. Many people go too far, but you nailed it.
Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Most of the footage was shot 24 fps with my Mini 2. The opening scene was done with the Mini 3. Since getting the Mini 3 I have switched to 30 fps succumbing to the will of the herd. At your suggestion I will have to try some 60 fps. I also am usually reluctant to doing a lot of color grading but I was trying to get attention in this demo I did for a Black Box application. I prefer footage that looks more like what I actually saw. By the way, I love the emphasis you place on cinematography on your channel. And you confirmed what I suspected; that is, I screwed up a lot of footage messing with manual settings and ND filters
