The spongy ground is permafrost, thawed due to summer weather. The areas of firmer ground are sitting over barely covered bedrock. Truth be told, walking thru/on permafrost ground is not a really very good idea, as there is an incredibly rich biology that lives in permafrost which also happens to be very delicate and compressing it can cause damage. When the Alaska Pipeline was built back in the late 60's-early 70's, respecting the importance of the permafrost to the natural environment cost millions of dollars. The original proposal for the pipeline was to bury it underground, below the permafrost layer, but that plan was nixed by all the both locals and engineers as soon as it was proposed. The end solution was to elevate the pipeline well above the permafrost, with spread legged stanchions extended down to bedrock below, many of which are actually engineered to be mobile over the rock they sit on, as permafrost moves almost like very slow moving water (or glaciers) over time. In many ways, permafrost can be compared with glaciers in that regard, as while glaciers are huge rivers of ice filled with all kinds of rock and soil debris that scour the landscape below it, permafrost is mostly frozen soil also moving slowly downhill. Due to the smaller particles in permafrost, it tends to "polish" the underlying bedrock it moves over in a way glaciers don't. The Canadian Shield are is a prime example of both glaciation and permafrost polishing. Sorry to lecture, I love geology.

Aren’t there bears and moose around there? I would be carrying a gun with me. We don’t even walk up our driveway without a gun. Did those rocks hurt your feet? There is no way I would cross a river. I’m sorry, I’m soft. I don’t watch that show. My husband used to, be he doesn’t anymore either. We have four wheel drive on our truck. It might make it. That’s the only way we would make it across a river. And I know our truck would make it up the hill. It makes it up our driveway all the time. I like that you have a sense of humor about getting your butt kicked by the ground. Maybe next time you can’t rent a four wheel drive ATV. And get up to the ridge. And then you can see Denali.

UPDATE in 2024 We upgraded to a VIP/Elite membership early this year. I wanted to be able to go park-park and have less restrictions during peak, which VIP/Elite does nicely. I want to stay in western states and say that the Trail Collection in California and Arizona are really the best options (coast in CA and almost all Encore in Arizona). With only a 60 day advance booking available, I can now say there is practically no way possible to ever book any Trails Collection in the southwest during the winter months. I've tried numerous times and there is nothing. They explain that Encore only has to provide "some" site to TT members. They decide how many they want to make available. They also sell site for seasonal and annual. It could be that a site only has 1 or 2 and they get booked before you have a chance. Now, with the Adventure upgrade, they can book further in advance and get all of the available slots. In the future, there will probably be a different upgrade that goes before Adventure. So, if you want Trails Collection, you will always be fighting for the few spots or choosing to go to Yuma, Arizona in the middle of summer. I will NOT be paying for that again. Most likely will not be able to get into a single park even once for the whole year...and we are full-time and trying.

Love it . I'm ready to go back to tiny. My husband and I lived overly large. Went to a small home. Then went to an 8 X 14 camper for 4 years. Now he's been building a new house but, since the C-19 and inflation. We are at a stand still . I want to go back to tiny. Loved it .

Great video showcase of the UP, all of those places are awesome. Don't forget the city of Marquette which is surprisingly urban and hip for the UP. Lots of great restaurants and microbreweries and remnants of its industrial past, the ore dock, etc. Also great nature stuff like Sugarloaf, Black Rocks, and a huge mountain bike infrastructure...
