Why does the file have to be in the Srgb colour space for Starry Sky Stacker?

Great video bro. Yes, this 100-400 may effect sales of its sister 70-200? Thing is, you could pop in filters too

I got one of the Benro's also and you left out one of its best features: the goof proof quick release. It is so easy when you are trying to hurry and grab that quick release knob by accident, if you have the L bracket there is an extra safety there. On the Benro you have to pull the knob out at the end. Also I think this head is better with heavy lenses (no lens flop-bang) the heaviest I have is the 80-200 2-8L -the Drainpipe- and it holds it very precisely, and the knobs don't get twice as hard to turn with the weight like a focus rail will. I would say this type has a learning curve.

Hang on. You say files for printing have to be brighter, because the file itself will print darker, and that's true. But how much brighter should the file be? No-one on the net can tell you this, either becaue they don't know or have found no way of explaining it. Most people get prints back that are too dark, that too is true, but that happens because they lack the knowledge to process accurately for printing. Matching an ICC profile to a specific file can be difficult and sometimes very frustrating, in fact the lab I use says forget about profiles and just stay with the RGB colour space. I like what you're trying to do here, Chris, but until you can nail 'how much brighter,' the explanation remains incomplete.

I find PhotoPills invaluable now for planning and exposure calculations with ND filters. No release required. Use self time with mirror lock up or electronic shutter. The blended shots are awesome.

No release. Use time release 2 or 10 seconds and use the mirror lock up first if using dslr, or electronic shutter on mirrorless cameras.

I picked up an older version of the Manfroto 10 years ago on eBay. Was in mint condition. Picked it up with a great studio tripod for about $250 shipped. Tripod alone was worth 400 MSRP. Legit, used is the way to go. That said some of the options for Leofoto are nice. Check out their geared assemblies. What I like about those is they're compact. Especially the Leofoto G3 or G4. Weighs a lot but so compact and doesn't have the same issues the Manfroto has with running into itself. Not sure if they apply to your tripod. They also have the Leofoto GW-01 which is similar to the Benro and Manfroto.

My best lightning photo was taken with a 3.2MP Olympus digitally camera and timing it. Actually two photos. One was a thin lightning, the other one was massive and not more than a mile away. This was back in 2001. Camera had a 64MB Smartmedia card 🤣. I had to formar the card couple of times. But got lucky in the end.

Thank you for explaining this better than anyone else! I love your comment, the landscape tells you what lens to use. Really helped me realize I need a mid-range lens and eventually to save for a telephoto lens. Thank you!

I know your pain man. I've been feeling it. Hold your camera with telephoto lens right where you want it, tighten down the screws, let go and it drifts down messing up your composition.

Great video Mike. I live in the North East of England not far from a place called Sycamore Gap. It was an area near Hadrian’s Wall with a beautiful sycamore tree sat in a valley that became even more famous after appearing in the movie ’Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves’’. Two idiots decided to fell the tree last September. Very sad.

I just use the timer to avoid vibration when the lightning is not frequent. And take 5-10 exposures. Aperture will depend if it’s too dark or not.

This is one of those lenses for which I have zero interest to buy myself but I'm just happy that it exists 😁 It's excellent. Plain and simple. One of those lenses you can point at to show that the Z mount system is awesome. For me it's just too short. So I went with the 180-600.

Storm Chaser here...I find it MIND BOGGLING that you can get lightning that clear at 800 ISO. When i'm running f/2.8 I usually end up needing 100, maybe 200 if the storm is far away, or else every strike within 10 miles blows out completely. Also, maybe it's a plains thing just because of the dynamics, but find myself not liking shots with over 10 seconds, mostly because the clouds end up blurred due to their movement in the exposure. That's not really as much of a concern in monsoons as the intra-cloud lightning isn't constant like it is during plains supercells.
@n8likesmath
@n8likesmath Месяц назад
2 things, either he is using a higher f stop which means less light which means no blown out bolts. Or two, he is using an ND filter to extend his shutter time which also blocks light and prevents bolts being blow out. Idk if this helps or not
@xJownage
@xJownage Месяц назад
@@n8likesmath I mean he mentioned being fully open or near that which is why I brought up the iso. Filters make sense I guess
@n8likesmath
@n8likesmath Месяц назад
@@xJownage I saw he was shooting f2.8 for one of his photos for 10 seconds. It looks like the dead of night there's no ambient light and the boys were far. That could explain it, also should point out that I would never shoot bolts at f2.8 you're just asking for any nice bolt to get blown out completely
@xJownage
@xJownage Месяц назад
@@n8likesmath you can absolutely shoot f/2.8 for lightning but you need to be around 100 iso. To be fair, as a lightning photographer, you really are always playing a delicate game of missing far bolts because you're not letting in enough light vs blowing out close ones with too much. It's always a game since lightning distance has a lot of variance.
@n8likesmath
@n8likesmath Месяц назад
@@xJownage yeah but the far bolts are not as rewarding as the close ones. I'm saying the best bolts, thick with insane branching and up close and massive, the shots you would hate to miss, would be blown out at f2.8 100iso. And those are the ones I wouldn't risk missing. The far away ones though, I couldn't care less, I've seen plenty of tiny stray bolts that aren't nearly as cool

What is the best image size for focus stacking? I'm using a D850 and when I have it set on large file size the PS output is too large to send back to LR. Thoughts? I gather you are in the east valley, given the times you have photographed the Superstitions!! I'm in Central Phoenix. Thanks.

Very helpful and lovely shots! One big question: can your two-second shutter delay be used in combination with 3-shot exposure bracketing? It seems not because the shutter must be held to do bracketing? Tell me it ain't so! Second less important Q: when you've saved settings in U1, will those settings mostly stay as you move over to aperture-preferred on top dial? Many thanks in advance, for responding.
