Thank you for this! I play left guard and im trying to get better with my pulling. I always get worried that the guy im kicking out will make a move on me and make the play. This really helped though
Coach, great video. A few questions, when you are in mustang are you still have red/blue before? Second question, and I think I know the answer, are all your motions words with the same letter of position? (A's motion is all A words?)
Couple of ways to do both of those things. You can align in a different formation and shift to 2-back. Movement makes the defense check late. Or, just align in 2-back and reduce the time they have to communicate. As for motions, giving them position specific (starts with their letter) motions is great. We've also found simplicity in tagging the letter to a constant motion name. ie. Jet/Quick, Orbit/Rocket can all be tagged with X, Z, A, B, Y, H... and you can get more mileage out of the same word. Use what best fits your players.
What a GREAT Video , You explain everything so well , PLEASE keep these up !! you do a Great job and a Huge help to us coaches teaching the young kids !!
When you coach the down block, are you coaching the head is upfield from the LOS or between the LOS and the defender? I.e. if I am down blocking to my left, which shoulder makes contact?
I see you speaking at the Mississippi Association of Coaches Clinic this week. I’m a retired coach love your videos & your approach to coaching ! I got a friend who’s coaching & will be there ! I told him to seek you out & get pic made ! They have a good lineup of speakers! Ok thanks Coach Simpson !
I listened to this right after I interviewed and hired our 5th coach on our staff. I checked all the boxes and even stated he wants to move on to a head coaching job and wants to start somewhere. All of this was started at my daughters softball teams cookout when a fellow father struck up a conversation! Anyway, great podcast at the perfect time. Your videos and your responses to my emails have shaped me as a coach to be a beacon in our community. Kenny, like i said last year, I believe I am developing an Arkansas accent with the amount of content of yours I consume with these podcasts! Thank you guys
Coach I want to see you guys play teams in South Florida. Like Central, Northwestern, Norland, Columbus, St. Thomas, or IMG. I would like to see how that offense works vs D1 high school players who are big fast and can hit.
I was just curious how it would look. We don't see that type of offense down here in South Florida. Maybe you should call those schools and have a friendly challenge. Maybe you could introduce that type of offense down here.
This right here is pure gold! So many gems. Thank you both gentlemen for doing this and sharing your time and knowledge. Can’t wait to retire from the Marines and be an AST coach. Semper Fi
KISS Ideology - Keep It Simple Stupid - I am a BIG Fan of simply Tagging players to change the look for the defense while virtually running all the same stuff.
Sounds more like zone allows a running back the latitude to pick the best gap that opens up. It requires a back with natural instincts, patience for the gap to develop, and good vision. While in gap scheme, the hole is already assigned.
Always love your content coach, but calling it 15-17 an wpic fail for an organization that has been very average for the better part of 30 years sounds like a sour grapes fans take.
how do you deal with a defender that is head up on a player that is supposed to down block? does he have the head up defender or is that responsibility for the next down blocker?
For Gap Down Backer, I never understood what they do if a defender is heads up on him. Is that defender your teammate outside of yous responsibility? Or is man the first rule? Thanks coach
