I had plans in 2020 to "drop out" and travel the US in my 1974 VW Westfalia, Alice, but it didn't work out - well, you know why.
So instead I rebuilt my engine and now this channel is my outlet for family stuff, doggies, friendly satire and fun, singing and bad guitar playing, or weekend camping trips and driving around the countryside. Please subscribe and come along for the ride (or not, depending on Alice's mood)!
@@SusansRoadLessTraveled Sissi- Empress of Austria , made the effort to learn Hungarian which endeared her to the Hungarian people, I think. very beautiful and charitable. I watched a movie about her starring Romi Schneider years ago. Stabbed to death by an anarchist who sharpened an old file , followed her for days waiting for an opportunity - sadly
Saw one of your shorts and I know it's unsolicited advice, but one gal who loves her old vehicles to another: 1) Learn your vehicle. Learn to do it's basic maintenance - Oil, filters, lube to the moving parts - at the least. In the process, you'll learn better what the tells are for various systems and how to prevent things from sneaking up on you again. It'll also save you boatloads of money. Heck, since your mechanic sounds so nice, he might even be willing to help learn if you ask nicely. Lot of good mechanics really wanna help people. 2) Join a club or forum if you can dedicated to your baby. You'll gain access to people who have tons of experience that will make your life much easier while learning how to care for her. 3) Since you clearly do not have one, talk to your mechanic about modifying your fuel system for a filter. Preferably one somewhere easy to access. Keep spares in a storage space in your ol' girl with the screwdriver to change 'em. It will save you a LOT of stress. Also, new gas tanks are available for all years of Type 2 VW. Highly recommend replacing it if you're getting rust issues this bad, as VWs of this era are really bad about rusting. You'd be just kicking the can down the road by only putting a filter on, and you really don't want the tank to rust through. And with metal as thin as they used back then, it's only a matter of time. And with it bad enough that it's clogging your carb, it'll be sooner rather than later.
Thank you for the feedback. Too bad you don't live around the corner! I wish I had started much earlier to learn so I wasn't so dependent on others. Though I was the one to procure all the new parts when I did a total rebuild several years ago - so it's not the old VW pancake motor anymore. Building out vids go back a couple of years ago. I did it twice b/c the first rebuild blew up on me 600 miles from home. I do get the gist of how it works -- but I just don't have the time to be doing engine work that she's been requiring. I moved and plan to hook up at some car shows over the summer and meet some people, but overall I just try to get her out every weekend and stay close to home. My move did allow me to get Hagerty's so the drop in that premium helps with expenses.
I’m internalizing this information hoping to burn it into my 🧠. Have no current plans for travel in Europe but this sounds like something I’d do. 😉 thank you for sharing so the rest of us can hopefully learn from it!
This one happens first Saturday of each month so I’ll try again in May. Couldn’t believe how full the lot was. They must have started pulling in at noon for a 4 o’clock show.
I’ve recently got a copy of this vinyl but I have a few questions because I’m starting to believe the one I have is fake. Mine is a bit wobbly and it just doesn’t seem right it also didn’t bring a protective cover that most vinyls usually have. Could you please answer these questions I would really appreciate it if you could compare and let me know. 🙏😊
Appreciate the comment. Jan 2023 video so all is OK now. All new engine, clutch plate assembly, pretty much everything -- so possibly just major user error 'cause it finally worked itself out. Or, it's a VW and she was just "having a moment." ✌
@@christopherwest5840 VW mechanics are a dying breed. I just drove my bus 25 miles to mine to have the oil changed and a once over. Closest guy I know that can/will work on it.
One of my sisters met a Coastie who worked at the Coast guard station in Montauk, Long island. He next got assigned to a remote station out in the ocean, a tiny island whose name I can’t remember. He went a little nuts after that post, maybe the isolation. We used to all write to him. This is before the internet and FaceTime, etc.
I'm having the same issue and said the same thing. The threads are improperly aligned to the handle on this model. I have several BruMates and this is the only model that does that. They say oiling the seal helps to allow it to be turned more for proper alignment, but it still makes it VERY difficult to unscrew the lid for refilling.
@@SusansRoadLessTraveled I’m only disturbed by two kinds because they can do some damage. And then there is this huge variety that gallops across the floor in the kitchen. 😆
