Just looked that up in my field guide, you might be right. I couldn't get close enough for a good ID. If so, that would be a lifer for me. Back in my childhood I considered a career in marine biology - considering what I'm doing perhaps I should've followed through! 🤣
@@OutdoorAdventuresForever They're pretty common out there, just inconspicuous and hard to find. They are territorial though. Likewise into marine bio got derailed. No end of weird stuff in the sea.
Good job Barry! I have been going to Point Dume for a long time and never took the time to properly snorkel. I will be better equipped the next time I go there.
Thanks. It's a 10 minute swim to get over to the pinnacles (the rocks protruding above the water) but the sea life there is interesting, conditions vary though. Let me know when you go.
No. And we were in the State Marine Reserve anyway, where "It is unlawful to injure, damage, take, or possess any living, geological, or cultural marine resource." More here: wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Marine/MPAs/Point-Dume#57787443-recreation
After riding a variety of 750/1100cc sport bikes while living in SoCA, my move to CO in 1994 completely changed my type of riding and brand of bike. KTM 350/500cc enduro bike were the perfect choice for technical off-road adventures, and my KTM 1090R is the perfect choice for fast pavement and easier off-road rides. CO offers the best off-road adventure trails imaginable. Thank you for sharing this video and proving my assertion! RTWpaul rode everywhere on a 2016 KTM 500cc 6 Days bike, so the Husky 501 was the best choice for this ride, unless you enjoy picking up heavy adventure bikes like the others were riding.
Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed the movie. The truth is the majority of our miles would probably be more comfortable on an ADV bike since we mostly did two track and dirt roads and then a bit of pavement. Plus ADV bikes have a more comfortable seat!! 🤣 😕 My bike shined in certain spots where the agility and lightness gave me an edge. If we had more technical terrain the tables might’ve turned. I’d like to finish the COBDR in the northern section we didn’t get to. Maybe one day.
Hard to tell because visibility was poor. If I had to guess, a few dozen in the general area. The concentration of sharks probably depends on conditions, time of day, which month, etc.
Moab looks beautiful. I was just in the area last week vacationing with family at Arches National Park. Love that area, and the trails look like a blast! If I lived out west I'd have never married ha. Would have been too busy on my bike and had no time chasing women lol. Subbing! I highly recommend the Continental Divide if you haven't ridden it. Amazing stretch of trail man. Ride safe!
I saw a fellow ride his bike off the edge once, accidentally. It's not something I like to play with. Fortunately for him, we were in a forest and the trees stopped him from rolling down the mountain. Even so, he rolled down about 200 feet. The bike was upside down about 60 feet down. Took all 6 of us to get him and the bike back up. I stay away from the edge.
Yes, these are all 2 way trails and accidents definitely occur. Be really careful like they suggest and avoid the place on a busy weekend. If you want to ride a directional trail system just go to Hollister Hills, and don't complain about the lack of one way trails at Ballinger. It is what it is.
Ballinger is much smaller. You could ride everything it has to offer in one long day. Hungry Valley and adjacent areas, like Frazier Mtn., if all open, could be triple that. Ballinger has hard, stutter bumps on sections of its trails. Even though its really the same terrain, Ballinger just has a different feel, it's own character. Watch my movie on Hungry Valley. That with this one reveals what Hungry Valley ,etc., offers - with the exception of Snowy / Piru / Miller trails, which I have yet to ride. Then watch all 3 Ballinger movies and you'll have the details.
@@OutdoorAdventuresForever I went out to Ballinger for the first time a few weeks ago and watched your three videos religiously to better understand the trails before I went! Wanting to explore out at Hungry Valley areas so appreciate these videos as well. I’ll definitely watch the other video your recommend. Get out to those other trails so I know what to ride 😂 Again, really appreciate your videos (and reply’s)
Would you say that Colorado no longer maintains these high pass roads. I saw a pass in the Sangre de Cristos that I used to ride when a teenager (53 years ago). A few years ago, I watched a video that someone did on it and it was in pitiful condition. I knew I wasn't going to muscle the 600 pound Ten loaded up with gear up that horrible path. It was no longer a road.
I'm sure those high pass roads are maintained. At the very least forestry service needs them for fires, etc. We all made it through fine, the only impasse being a snow drift which we got around rather easily on established path.
I have been thinking in some of these Moab videos that the depth perception isn't true. I've been an off-roader both on bikes and trucks most of my life and cameras just don't do any justice to steepness. But being a rider, I can tell by the way the bike is traveling and your handling of it that the ground is steep. When you hit the tree in Part 3 of Moab, I felt the shock of hitting the tree, and the panic of going into he brush. I fell on a cactus once in Arizona (I think). This is before armor, but I was wearing a leather jacket.
Yes, you’re correct. And I place that message occasionally in the movies… Sloped terrain is steeper in reality than it appears in video. I did that in Moab day 2 for example. Speed however is the opposite; movement in video appears faster than reality. Glad you had that leather jacket on. I’ve passed thousands of jumping chollas when riding, still always mindful of how much pain they could inflict.
Nice! Reminds me of my youth traveling across the country, riding desert and mountainous trails. I've had my share of tumbles. My vintage Honda SL 125 still has a bent front fender.
I'm glued to the screen riding with you. In my 20's 50 years ago, all I had was a Honda 125 4-stroke trail bike. I was an ornery rider where failure was not an option. I loved taking my bike out into the west and finding trails to ride. I don't remember Moab being a place then, but perhaps it was. I had planned to come out there, but I think I bought the wrong bike. I like to ride to my destinations. While I still ride local dirt roads and a few narrow tracks, I think my serious dirt days are behind me. So, I'm enjoying this ride with you, and wishing I was there.
Glad you enjoyed the trip! 👍Day 3 will have some amazing trails as well. If you have an ADV bike or similar, you can still ride Moab's dirt roads and 2 track. If you haven't already been there, Canyonlands is another great option... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dpypUOXSWHs.htmlsi=nPwvlZmY5ZoKrVI-
Loved this video! Amazing footage and story along with it. I wish we got to hit some of those trails you guys did while we were on enduro loop. That stuff looked so fun!
Glad you enjoyed it. 👍 I like to share my complete experience, both on and off the bike, mentally and physically, good or bad. The Lone Mesa loop was my favorite, mainly because of the scenery with the afternoon sun. Next year we'll all ride it together and I'll get a better run at that rock climb! Speaking of which, I was so tempted to do the Enduro Loop climb "Carnage #1" but had an outpatient surgery appt. the following week and decided against anything I thought might cause a slip or fall. Turns out I should've gone for it! With my foot injury the next day, the surgery had to be postponed anyway. 🤦♂
Got a question for you, I used to live in Pedro off of Pacfic& 39 before Point Ferman lighthouse i miss the area have you ever seen a shark diving off San Pedro waters?
I was only off trail briefly and quickly saw there was no suitable path to get around the obstacle. I get your point. And the "high road" we wound up taking was established 2 track.
Loved this video, I'm 28 and used to go to Hungry Valley almost every weekend with the family when i was a kid. I haven't been back there in 10+ years, still feels like i remember most of the trails i was on like it was the back of my hand. Looking to get a dirtbike and go back there this summer, now that i have a truck.
@@OutdoorAdventuresForever Morning either one bro I scuba but never do cuz I cant find anyone to go with I can even just take you freedive if bubbles are no good. I love being on the water but I need a purpose I have tried to dive with some for years but never happened I just gopt tyhe 13 whaler dailed in new 40 HP and Im getting old so doing a chatter might be all I have left lool
What type of camera equipment do you use. Most riding videos are very difficult to watch but your picture is very stable and much more enjoyable than most. Also love the written commentary. Keep it up.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I try to make my movies more personal, to reflect the entire experience, not just the thrilling moments. I use a GoPro Hero 8 Black on the helmet mouth, 1080 x 60, wide view and high stability settings. Nothing fancy really.
Glad you got out! Nicely edited. Beautiful conditions. 66F! Heat map is showing Anacapa at the edge of a warm plume that extends coast. Looks like you're downtime is improving.
Yes conditions were unexpectedly good, glad you enjoyed. Didn't see any particularly interesting sealife except for the whale off the boat, but there's always another day. Viz in the kelp canopy was gratifying enough for this trip. As for bottom time, I'm still around a minute or so. I need to dive more... or get discipline going with dynamic apnea, like daily!
Lotta candy there! B29 might be my fav with the PBY a close second. Perfect music selection too! There was an air event at Camarillo today so a C47 was flying around Ventura and also a AN14 (old Soviet STOL light cargo) followed by what might have been an old trainer jet with wing mounted engines which seemed weird because the AN14 is really slow.
Yes those were my two favorite planes as well! I wanted to walk through the PBY but the line was too long, barely had the patience to get inside the B29. Surprisingly, this show was kinda weak; there weren’t nearly the number of static planes listed in the program magazine. I know these programs are printed in advance and participants and events can change, but I’d have to say that of the 3 Miramar shows I’ve attended this was the weakest in terms of displays, though the freestyle motocross and electric bikes helped “save the day” since I’m big on that.
