My grandfather received a pacemaker in the mid-70s, after a heart attack. It was large, the size and shape of a pack of cigarettes. I remember seeing the outline of it under his skin. His final pacemaker was barely noticeable.
Vern loucks helped my father start the workout company, a family owned gym in Normal IL in 1998 after my dad worked under him at Baxter as a sales rep. He helped my dad start the locally owned gym as he described to Vern that it was his dream to own a gym and help grow a community around fitness. Vern helped my father with the initial funds to start the gym and today the gym is thriving with a amazing community of people. Vern never asked for anything back because all he ever wanted was to see my dad live his dream and help parole. There aren’t enough good words in the dictionary to describe this mans character and devotion to see others succeed. Truly a role model to me. I hope we can all learn something from the great life he lived and strive to treat others the way he did. Rest In Peace Vern.
Great story! Vern was my uncle, and was a mentor to me. When I was getting my MBA at UCONN in 1991, Vern flew out to speak to the school, stayed for dinner, and flew back. He was sick, but would not have thought of reneging on that gift to the school. The room was packed - SRO. Any time I called for his advice, his secretaries would schedule a time. He was a very smart man and a real giver! He and mother spoke frequently right up until his last days.
