Very nice video. I grew up in Southbridge and consider myself fortunate also. It really was a great town back in the day. I knew Fitzy also when I was a boy. I grew up on Charlton St and Fitzy had family in the house on the corner of Charlton St and Lyon St. We were always playing football in the St. Mary's cemetery field. Fitzy would teach us football pointers and sometimes throw the ball around with us.
When I was growing up in Southbridge in the 1960's, 70's, and 80"s, we never locked the doors to our house or even locked our cars. There was no need to. It was perfectly safe. A great town to grow up in.
This is not specific to this video, but on your website you mentioned that "Family movie clip on youtube- last scene shows Cliff Harvey on Fiske Hill and at a "Ham Fest" - - I'd be very interested in seeing this video of Cliff Harvey if it is still available and if you could please provide a link. Thanks!
Believe or not that beautiful Church in the background at 0:33 in now torn down. The iconic Denholm building is destined for the same fate. The people in charge in Worcester have lost their collective minds.
Worcester. I went to Classical High in the 60s and my first job was at the Gazette. Downtown was a thriving place with all that great architecture. Urban renewal killed the city's downtown. I loved Ephraim's bookstore and the movie theaters and all those downtown department stores. What a loss.....
Was there in '86 now showing my son. One of the coolest things about the dorms then was being able to paint your room and door. I remember all the copies of album art painted on door room doors. Groups like Boston and Yes and Pink Floyd, etc.
My mother took us there that day and she got close enough to Julie Andrews to snap a photo of her. My mother is now 92 and that photo is still buried somewhere in her big old cluttered house. Edit: I forgot to thank you for uploading this video. I was amazed when I found it.
My father was an extra in this movie rolling a hoop on the common. He said that many other kids from elementary school were selected to be in it as well
My dad was there! Told me about this flood many times. I had no idea it was THIS bad. Amazing how they were able to recover from something so devastating.
So sad my Mother was born and raised in Worcester. I have not been back since I was in 6th grade. All the stores are gone Barnett , Dehomes, boys club, Kresge.
i was on the island when bob hit, our family house was on Narraganset st. my brothers nova was crushed by a tree bad, & he had to drive it back to amherst :)
Thanks for this. I was born on the Vineyard in 1965 and the Islander was the first ship I road on just a week after I was born to take me to see my grandmother on the mainland. I grew up on that ship and have a lot of fond memories of her. She'll be missed.
I remember back then getting on the city bus for 25 cents and going downtown. As a kid back then my parents didn't have to worry about their 10 yr old going downtown. People were friendly back then and crime was non existent during the daytime hours. As Bob Hope would sing "Thanks for the Memories".
WELL DONE DICK!!! I REMEMBER GRACE MORLEY, SHE LIVED ON FOREST AVE. I WAS PEDDLING PAPERS AT THE TIME. ALSO REMEMBER JOHN FITZGRALD, HE LIVED IN THE THREE TENEMENT AT THE CORNER OF MARCY AN CURTIS ST. AND OF COURSE THE STRING MUMMERS FOR THE TOWNS 150TH:)
