The Giglio Society of East Harlem is a devoted group of individuals who have dedicated their lives to honor Sant’ Antonio. Their love and devotion is on display each year during the Annual Italian Festival held in East Harlem, New York. They honor their Patron saint in very much the same fashion as their ancestry did and still do annually today in Brusciano by building a Giglio and dancing it in the streets of Manhattan, N.Y.
Maybe NO GIGLIO this year in 2021 what with this virus? the spectators can wear mask but the GIGLIO LIFTERS might be able to come up with some kind of a mask that can break down outside germ fibers but be able to BREATH INWARD but would,nt be easy while overheating lifting all that weight!!!! Our Ancestors came here and had to survive the best that they could with the family kid's usually 6 or better. And no free gov't Assistance .(free food, housing, medical and $for other expenses ) They all got a good luck in your new country. And where also looked down apon by the ppl who where already here and from the other nationalities who thought that they where a threat to their jobs.
Only making this comment because as JULY/AUGUST arrive each year a few of whom used to live here in east harlem come over and park thier cars and look for WHAT USED TO BE!! Perhaps those that can not make it here physically just might know how to work thier CELLPHONE/COMPUTER and look up EAST HARLEM GIGLIO and come across these comments:just about EVERONE who lived here IS GONE (except for the 24 of us (last count from 96st.1st.ave.to 120 st. 1st.ave.plus every city block in between 1st.ave.to 3rd.and lexington ave.) who still reside here for whatever reasons) Those reasons are owning the home,easier to go below 96 street to favorite hospital where we are known or know all the hospital people,are happy to rent in a great building with an older educated landlord,and are surrounded with plenty of supermarkets and a short walk tru snow,ice and whatever!!
