Laugh about the Evesham phonebox because Mick, as a kid, apparently used to cycle around the village of Pencombe with an acoustic on his back, and strum it in the phonebox on the village green. I wasn't there in the late 60s, but in the early 70s was a fairly frequent user of the same box. Mick's father ran the post office in nearby Stoke Lacy.

This album was number 1 in New Zealand (which continued the streak, since the live album Stage was also number 1 there and, and then Scary Monsters was also number 1!) Edit: I just saw that in New Zealand it apparently came out later and reached number 1 after Scary Monsters, and also, I forgot that after Stage, comes Lodger, which in New Zealand was number 3, which is still great!

Great guys. I think the live '74 album is one of the best ever. Can't stop playing it (Anniversary edition). Also reading the book, thoroughly entertaining.

just listened to Aladdin Sane album the other day, whenever I think of that album in particular, the piano is all I think of. "Aladdin Sane", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". To me, the piano defines the album. The polyrhythms he plays then like plays a strangely harmonized "tequila" for a couple seconds in the Aladdin Sane track solo haha, then just f***ing hammers the shit out the piano after that what a legend. Brilliant. I'm not huge into pianists but I think this guy has to be my favorite piano player based on this album alone. Collabs with Ian Astbury and Perry Ferell too, I got some RU-vid searches to do. "you're the musician who was with David Bowie for the longest span of his career", "over a thousand shows", "at least 19 albums I've played on" haha wow. Thanks for this interview.

I wonder if Bowie ever asked Marc about Mark E Smith? Seeing as he praised The Fall in The Buddha of Suburbia album blurb and Marc’s old Fall connection.

Been a fan since heard them doing Thunderbuck Ram on the sampler called "Bumpers." 1st saw Mott the Hoople at the Caley Cinema in Edinburgh in 1973. Then at 1st reunion in Hammersmith, London and then Newcastle. Also went to the '74 version at The Barrowlands in Glasgow. Superb. Thanks for posting.

Wow, these guys are old! They look just like me! Saw them in Houston, TX at Hofheinz Pavillon in very early 70s. Met Billy Gibbons, of ZZ Top, at that show. We said Hi to Billy and he turned to talk to us about a new band he started called ZZ Top. Good times!

Could not agree more with Herbie’s view on the difference between music in the 1950’s - 1970’s compared with present music and the robotic synthesiser being the sound that began its death. Musicians working together and changing the tempo when they feel like it now being lost and the magic feeling of working together like that etc
