They simply weren't ready for that sling arm action I believe, of course Rumesh was breathing fire but WI have played Lillie/Thommo/Imran/Akram/Waqar who were the fastest of their times.
After helmets were introduced in late 70s , they say Viv Richards was the only batsman who never wore any protection on the head but atleast he used to bat with cap/hat but Larry Gomes was the only one never wore anything on head. Gavaskar in his autobiography says that he tried to wear helmet but it made him uncomfortable. He used wear a skull cap under his sunhat..
Rumesh Ratnayake was the slingshot action who could make the ball rear up from good length like a king cobra! The windies got a taste of their own medicine of a strict diet of liquid pace from greenhorns like SriLanka!😅
Thanks for uploading. A good return for the way the West Indians treated us at the 1975 World Cup. They sent two of our players to the hospital. Despite that, we replied with 274 for 4, to their 360 odd. (It was a 60 overs then). Appreciate if you can upload that.
@AAbaya2024 Get your facts straight moron. Australia made 320 plus and Jeff Thomson sent two SL batsmen to the hospital, not the West Indies. WI did dismiss the Sri Lankans for 86 in that tournament but it was two medium pacers who did the damage, Keith Boyce and Bernard Julien
"That is the end of Tendulkar, is it the end of India? " The power this man held during that time is just brilliant, so much so that once he was out India's chances to win were next to impossible
That's real unplayable stuff from Macho, he was a devastating bowler, how well he set up & outsmarted Steve Waugh is a sheer cricketing delight 🏏 Not surprisingly he's known as Malcolm "Terror" Marshall ❤
So now nobody's gunna say the umpires were bought by the opposition team?? One decision goes in the favour of the Australian team and everyone loses their mind
I remember the mentality, arguments of Indians at that time. After Sachin got out, some people left the TV hall. India lost 4 wickets for just 17 Runs. many friends and elders told India will be finished within 100 Runs. [Some told to save the honor they have to cross double digit] Some were saying Jadeja and Robin can make maximum 50, because they are tail enders. Once Jadeja and Robin take India more than 100 Runs, some people heard this commentary from Radio, came back and continue watching the match. Many couldn't believe Jadeja scored 50 and continuing with patience. First time I saw him without smile batting patiently seeing all his partners [Bowlers] are getting out one by one. Jadeja scored Century with Shane Warne's appreciation. I saw Jadeja handle the nerves and plays better in critical situations. Luckily it was not repeated in 2011 World Cup, but other than that I am seeing the history is repeating when India is facing Australia in Knockout Situations.
Darrell Hair will never have an award for impartial umpiring named after him. With a non-partisan umpire India would have won this by 3 or 2 wickets. I wonder how much Hair was paid for his split-second LBW dismissals.
Surprised to see people being so much critical of tendulkar's failures against mcgrath. Mcgrath himself is all time great bowler who had habit of picking opposition's best batsman. He troubled every great batsman of his era which includes Sachin, Lara, Kallis, Inzamam, Dravid..
I read Harsha Bhogle writing about this test match for umpiring as being the worst. I mean you are playing fucking cheats in their own backyard , but I didn’t find the decisions any controversial. The LBWs looked adjacent
The problem is apart those days indian players not successful against McGrath and wasim and akthar and lee and every thing changes after Ganguly took over the captaincy with the players like sehwag and yuvraj laxman arrival and it releases burden on sachin dravid Ganguly
