I think paper bedding (the one for burrowing animals, it's usually in the rodent section) is best for holding burrows, and you can get different colors if you want.
Oh also wear gloves when feeding and recommend that you use tongs as well. Helps keep your baby from associating your hand with food. And yes they are dramatic asf when you try to pick them up 🤣
The sad thing about these is that they will probably end up like the Emperor Scorpions in a decade or so, very rare and expensive due to overcollection. It is important that we don't make the same mistakes and try to actively breed them.
So we’re totally tripping balls RN…happy 4th btw. I just wanted to say this is a righteous dude. We watched this dude go off for like 20 mins and every minute is better than the previous. He’s hysterical but man, he loves this shit
I must say, this is the most informative video I've ever seen on hognoses. Literally covered everything I could think of. Wish I would've seen this when I first started getting into hogs. I will definitely recommend this video to others in the future!
Very good video. I’m getting my first snake this weekend and one of the first comments I see is someone in the same boat who had the same idea as me… thaw mice in the microwave. I’m so glad I watched this video because that’s what I thought you’re supposed to do!
Just a mom here..that got talked into taking care of a corn snake until my own kid can on his own! I love the little corn noodle. We named him papi. I fed him and I can’t wait to hold him when he gets bigger.
The first Reptile I ever ordered online was for my birthday last year. I had to wait a few weeks for her to ship since my birthday was in December and was so excited when I was able to pick her up and unbox her. She was an albino stripe het anery that I got from morph market. She was so tiny but surprisingly long. She was so beautiful with sherbet and bright orange and yellows. I had her in a critter keeper to start but that was a big mistake as she escaped after only having her for a little over a month 😢 I cried so much when I realized she was gone I tore apart my apartment and tried all the ways online for finding your lost snake and I never did find her again. I was so upset for a very long time. It's now been just over a year since she disappeared and I still want a new animal. I can only have one that can live in a 40 gallon enclosure though so that limits me on the kind of animal I can get. I'm thinking about an albino African house snake or rosy boa.
my corn snake is so cute she’s a hypo baby so she is rlly only pink red black and a little bit of orange and she’s so sweet! i took her home on friday and it’s been 5 days with her now and we hang out everyday. she’s my bff she’s already started to come out onto my hands when i open her cage and she loves to explore so much! i do feel like she needs more than a 10 gallon because she loves to move. i enjoy learning more about corn snakes so thank you for this video even though it’s a few years later lol
There’s this substrate by this company called biodude and he makes bioactive substrate for hognoses I love it! It also never smells and is easy to spot clean
14:46: No. UVB CFL's actually do give off a decent amount of UVB. It's not comparable to the peak output given of by mercury vapor bulbs, but it's pretty omnidirectional (unlike Hg bulbs) and, when coupled with a good reflector to concentrate the light onto a baking spot, can exceed a Ferguson zone of 2 at a distance of about 10 in. This should be adequate for most baking species. Definitely get the highest output CFL you can, but they're completely serviceable for 120 gal or small (assuming the animal comes to the baking site frequently). Also, if you have more than a couple bulbs running at any given time, get a UVB meter or Ferguson index meter (i.e. a UVB meter with filters that mainly pass the short wave UVA and long wave UVB responsible for D3 synthesis). You'll find that most (but not all) brands continue outputting at least 50% of their starting UVB for well over a year which can save on bulb replacement cost. Do stay away from LED UVB. As of 2022 when I last investigated this, the bulbs I got started off almost dangerously bright, but degraded to almost undetectable levels in the span of 2 to 4 months.
Sure I could win one over with draconian charm. >>;=) I only recently found out these exist watching a family in FL doing a YT vid where they were cleaning up on their property and found one. Very skinklike in look/texture it seems.
BRO. I caught my little skink today and was setting up his house. I was in the woods looking for stuff for his new enclosure and I flipped something and seen something slither away. I caught it and it was one of these. I’m keeping it and now I’m trying to do all I can to make sure he’s happy and healthy
I love your show. What’s the difference between a yellow foot and a red foot I have a yellow foot. She’s 13 her name is Sam love your girl or your boy I’m sorry.
I have two corn snakes. Both were rescues. My first one is a 5 year old female Named Voodoo, she is a regular amel. She wasn't fed nearly enough while she was growing, and she ended up very stunted because of it. She is only a little over 2 feet long, and a skinny little thing. She is the tiniest adult corn snake I have ever seen, but she has so much personality! She is super active and gets excited when I come into the pet room and comes right out of her hide to watch what I'm doing in hopes that. My other corn snake is a MASSIVE male butter morph that I named PoppaCorn. His age is unknown but I am apparently his 4th or possibly 5th owner so I assume he has to be an older fella. He is by far the biggest corn snake I have ever seen at just over 6 feet long, and he is thick too. When I rescued him from a friend's brother, he was extremely obese (almost like a ball python!), covered with layers of stuck shed, had a bad respiratory infection, and his barren, empty enclosure hadn't been cleaned in what looked like a year or more. It was covered in poop and mold, it smelled sooooo bad. They would just pile on more wood shavings over the poop instead of cleaning it up. It also stunk of cigarette smoke. I couldn't believe it. Just disgusting. The poor guys heat lamp was way too hot for him too and there was nowhere in the enclosure he could go to escape the heat. It was 108 degrees in the intended basking spot. I was so grateful to be able to get him out of that situation. I have had him for about 2 years now and he is doing fantastic and loved very much. I have gotten his weight to a much healthier place, and he always has perfect sheds now and no more RI. He is a big sweetheart and really loves being with people. He would just hang out around my shoulders and in my hair all the time if I would let him. Corn snakes are such good-natured creatures. Even after poor treatment from humans they are very accepting and trusting of humans. They are such awesome and beautiful snakes. Sorry for the super long comment. I wanted to tell my snakes' stories. :)
You seem to know a lot. We just got one from another owner, been looking for a year. He’s approx 8 years old, we only have snakes so this is new. He did great the first few days, ate well, very spazzy and we haven’t tried to handle him yet. Today he suddenly has his eyes closed and they seem leaky like something is in them and he’s lethargic. I feel terrible and don’t know how to help him especially since we can’t handle him yet and stress him out. We have a deep layer of the zoo med jungle/coco fiber stuff that has to be expanded with water. I’ve been told that’s ok, but how do they not get sand or moss or stuff in their eyes if they burrow, since they have eyelids unlike snakes?? Any suggestions my daughter is so worried about him.
Amazing video! I am going to refer to this video on my upcoming socializing snakes vid because this is such a great, educational, and well-thought out video on a very misunderstood species! Thank you for bringing knowledge and heart to the reptile community! <3
Im sorry to say but this video has a few flaws. Aspen bedding is good for most snakes but specefically the corn snake is irritated by it, get coco blocks instead.
Back in high school I read a book about king snakes and it showed a picture of it eating a coral snake. I saw videos of a king snake eating a Mojave desert rattlesnake in which has the same neurotoxins as a coral snake. So they are immune to that type of venum as well!
