Perhaps a very hypothetical question and purely theoretical, but if the need were really high (loss of several ships) would it then in theory still be possible to make these ships ready and combat-ready again? Or is this impossible?
I myself think that it will be possible to get the ship sailing, but for example the powder bags and the grenades are no longer in stock, nor are they being manufactured. Not to mention the outdated technology in large parts of the ship.
Here’s a RU-vid video I found that goes through answering that question I thought was interesting. Basically, you would have to put the ship in dry dock for about a year, and pay $2B for restoration and updating. That does not account for the lack of ammunition and powder, but you could probably get the 5-inch guns to work which there are some stockpiles for. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bI_6nUwnb2g.htmlsi=3FFInfLSP_HbadDP
@@ScottBentona Thanks, very enlightening video. It does indeed show that it is unrealistic to think that an Iowa battleship can be reactivated. I think it would be more obvious to put a recently decommissioned carrier back into service.
The largest guns on a navy vessel were not on board of the Iowa class battleships, but on the Japanese WW2 battleships Yamato and Musashi; they were 18,1 inch....
@@Vervelio01Yes, they mention that on the gun tour, but qualify it to invalidate the size of the Japanese guns with some detail, although I can’t remember the qualification. Maybe you know, or maybe Iowa can chime in. It could be those ships never saw any combat deployment or were never fired. I’m not sure. I do remember the Japanese boats did not have the same accuracy or ability in targeting since the Iowa had a centralized targeting computer system which was new, and the Japanese ships still worked out range and direction manually on paper. Even with the targeting computer onboard to determine where the guns were pointed, they still missed most of the time, although during WWII, they hit their target more frequently than other ship guns, so it was a significant advancement.
@@ScottBentona In this way a 16 inch gun is much more effective than an 18.1 inch gun with less good aiming means. Besides the accuracy I am also curious if the speed of loading and firing differed much between the two classes of battleships.
@@Vervelio01 - That’s a good question. I don’t know the comparison between the two ships, however, on the gun tour, I remember I was very impressed with the rapid frequency Iowa could reload and fire her guns per minute on both the 16 inch guns as well as the 5 inch guns. Altogether, it was a lot of firepower.
This was my childhood! They were one of the bands that defined the early and mid 80's! They were part of the New Wave era. Along with Culture Club, Wham, Kajagoogoo, Thompson Twin, Berlin, and Depeche Mode. The music were so fun and danceable back then. Duran Duran's music wasn't about politic and violence. It was just pure fun! I also love their hairstyles and clothes! Brought back a lot of good fun memories!
I had exactly the SAME view, vantage point and crowd experience in Toronto. They used footage from the Toronto show for "The Reflex" video... amazing year for music and Duran in particular ! Thanks for posting this, great memories!
Hello all the way from Ireland, just watched your Queen Mary tour, two weeks ago while travelling from LA to San Diego we stayed the night of this beautiful old Lady of the Sea, an absolutely amazing experience
I can’t believe I just found this, I was a little kid at this concert all alone. I lied to my Mom and said I was meeting my friend and her Mom there and had my Mom drop me off there. I ended up front row and pinned against the stage. I was eventually pulled out by security onto the stage before it ended and was walked out through a stairwell and the whole band came walking on it and all said hello to me. It was a dream come true.
WOW! I use to live in Santa Monica over 20 years ago. I now live on Miami Beach, FL. I do visit LA, but I've not been back since then, so I was shocked to see this video of how it looks like today. The Sand & Surf use to be the Mann Criterion 6 movie theatre. I'm shocked that so many stores and restaurants are closed. The Third Street Promenade is so empty! Sunday use to be sooooo packed on the weekends. That huge empty 1940's storefront at Santa Monica and Wilshire use to be a GAP store. That giant orange bldg by the alleyway use to be a Hooters 20 years ago. WOW! That REI store closed down? Damn, Urban Outfitters is still around for 20 years? The AMC Broadway Theatre was originally owned by Cineplex Odeon. I love that store. WOW! Oh yeah, I was there that afternoon when that car plowed down the Farmer's Market and killed 10 people and like 70 people got injured. It was so busy that day, and I had just left the area and was walking home. Horrific scene. After that, Santa Monica PD put patrol cars at both ends of the Farmer's Market to stop anyone from driving down the street. Thanks for the video!!!
Thanks, for the comment, John (Jhon?). That whole place was the center of my universe for probably 10-15 years, so to see it now the way it is, like you express, is heartbreaking. I went over to Main Street which was fine. Lots of stores, lots of people. I went over to Westwood to take it look, and it was fine. I may go to other locations as well, but for some reason 3rd Street Promenade seems to be taking the brunt of all of the Santa Monica areas. Not sure why that is, but it's a mess as you can see.
@@ScottBentona Yeah, I miss living in Santa Monica. I did visit last July and October 2023 but it was quick. This year will spend a couple of hours and walk around. I need to get a Hot Dog on a Stick.
@@jhoncornejo9358 - Now that you bring it up, I should probably head over to the Santa Monica Pier (and that whole Big Dean's/Hot Dog On A Stick areas), and see what's happening there. I know Venice is a mess, even more so than it usually is which I also intend to check out, but this is not the same Santa Monica you remember in general. Much different vibe, and definitely no fun any longer.
Awesome! Especially that guy with the long black hair who plays guitar. Sweet solo and cool overall playing. Scott Benton did a great job putting this one together.
Thanks Scott. Rick and I found this very fun to watch and to see how Bambudda has come back. Rick got very emotional and started tearing up as he had thought Bambudda was gone. We really hope to return. You will have to let us know how the conference was this year too!
thank you so much for this..... such choas and mayhem! i would have been like 13 at this show but i was in the east asia reading about this on the english smash hits magazine thank you
She looked like she was airsick when you came around the curtain. That's okay. The girl that picked me told me. She was an actress and a model and engaged. And she bought my trip for 3 hundred bucks😮 And took her fiancé to Cabo.Hotel Sol Mar. My video tape disintegrated before I could get it over to a hard copy My fifteen minutes of fame She picked me because I told her. I would spend my whole check on the date. Then she screamed at me when I told her. I would sell my trip for $500😂😅
There are really two things to consider: cow tipping indeed was just a few years old by then, but mostly, at that point in time when this TV episode was shot, there was no internet, or email, or even America Online yet, so not all information was centralized or accessible like it largely is now. There were 1200 baud modems you could use your landline to call in on and post messages to message boards, but only the techies had the interest and equipment to do that. Cow tipping is also pretty much a myth and doesn’t work as described. However, cow PAINTING was somewhat of a thing, but I have a feeling even that activity was probably urban legend. The world without the internet was a much different world, and arguably a better one.
I honestly don't know. Probably not. Even my uncle (Marty) never saw it. It sat in a box in my closet with all the other films I made at that time for 30 years before I got it transferred from Super-8 to a digital format I could post. It doesn't look like it has a lot of hits for the most part even though I've posted it on social media from time-to-time, so I'm doubtful this has really been discovered or much less appreciated.
Hey Scott…I’ve replied twice to you…And it goes away, so maybe this will make it! Go see on my page a live version of Hearts that I recorded on vhs way back, and recently digitized. I’m in touch with John DeCaro and Mark too…I can turn them on to this video you made. JB.
Thank you so much for posting this amazing video. It brought back so many memories. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to see them live back in 1984 but I did see them live a couple months ago. They are the greatest band ever!!
I can't imagine interviewing any of those guys in the first segment for a job. They have zero clue on how to think on their feet and really seem like they never learned anything in school except grab-ass.
Interesting! I never knew. I can see a bit of a resemblance in the facial construction and especially, the wit and charm. I always had a crush on Jeff MacGregor.
A few years ago I managed to talk to Kathy (who is the person who runs the official website of the band) I asked her about how it was possible that perhaps the best tour in the history of the band has so little video material, She told me He said that in those years it was very expensive to make videos and that he would have to be thankful that the documentary Sing blue silver and the show As the light go down existed. But she didn't fully answer my question since to make a documentary or a show absolutely everything is filmed and then edited. I believe that the band has in its archive everything that was left out of the final edition of that tour as well as images of several other shows. In 2005 I saw the band live in Madrid and I could see that the show was filmed entirely from 3 cameras and THAT VIDEO IS NOT AVAILABLE the band will have in their archive. I don't understand why Duran Duran isn't slowly releasing their unpublished shows for sale like other bands currently do. a pity.
She looks away nearly insanely and has that half regret smile, it's a bit awkward lol. That's why I prefer love connection because they get to initially pick with an answer AND seeing their looks, then they date and discover more about their personality. I think that's a safer order than being disappointment straight away like she clearly was.
Number one played up his appearance and muscles too much so I knew she wouldn't pick him. The three women in one night did number 3 in. Women don't want a player who has many other women.
I saw them in Dallas. The crowd was so loud you could hardly hear them. You can hear an increased roar from time to time. They had a video screen on top of the stage and when they would show one of them on the screen. The screams were even louder!
Yes, the increase was usually when John Taylor was shown or the band did some cute funny interactions with each other. ❤ It was an amazing time to be a young Duranie!
This is the year they really blew up and became a teeny bopper band and totally turned me off to them until the album Astronaut years later when they were a reunion band. Just listen to all the screaming girls. Total turn off for teenage boys.
The producers were also trying to repair this show after Elaine Joyce's stint the year before. She was great on Match Game and other panel shows. But her as a host left lot to be desired
