It is known for its line *"Not a step back!" (Ни шагу назад!, Ni shagu nazad!)*, which became the primary slogan of the Soviet press in summer 1942. It forbid any retreat without any order and the punishment for the violators. But the barriered detachments squads which consisted of the most experienced soldiers and the bravest ones (was made among Germans firstly) were established in the rear and sometimes were sent by military tracks to the most dangerous parts of the front, the gial eas to make stop soldiers panic and help them to stabilise the situation (sometimes they went themselves to battle as the first ones, showing the examples of the courage). As a Communist I must thank our Communist past at least for country-wide education system, which appeared only after the Revolution. So firstly in our history all the people could acknowledge their own culture, not only the rich Russian nobility. We have unique history, which was defined by our unique geography. Russia is the most populated polar/sub-polar country. Moscow is on the Edinburgh/Copenhagen latitude - nowhere else is a megapolice with 20 mln inhabitants so deep into north. Petersburgh even more northern, and it has 6-mln population, more than all Scandinavian capitals taken together. As you understand, living so deep in North leads to so called "risky agriculture". Your summer is very short with unpredictable weather changes, which may kill you with hunger in half a year. Life here was like a polar expedition - and you can't allow you to compete inside the collective. Losers will die and winner will be eaten by polar bears. So do your harvesting together, as fast as you can, and support each other to avoid hunger. On the other hand, such harsh and poor soils had no real value - so Russian (in a form of Slavic tribes, migrating to North-East from Danube valley since V AD) didn't need to compete with indigenous Finno-Ugric tribes. Land is free and there is a plenty of it - so you can settle without battling your neighbours. That's why Russia since its most early times was multitribal, lately multinational. That's why we have a Moscow mayor who is from Khant (polar deer herders' tribe), and it's common case here. So I'm proud to be half Russian, proud that my country tried a Socialist experiment first in world history - and I'm glad when other peoples abroad get some knowledge about us. Funny thing: Russians themselves can say that they don't like many things about their country, that it's corrupt, poor, that they are tired to live in it but dear god, If someone else would try to speak bad of Russia - they will tier that man appart 😅.
