You do make a fair point. Digging deeper, the term fanatic itself originates from Latin's "fanaticus", meaning "pertaining to a temple, inspired by a divinity" (dictionary.com). In sports and entertainment 'fan' implies support, enthusiasm, and community. Metaphorically it implies fanning the fire, adding fuel. So while I see your point, I'd still rather be a fan than a follower. How 'bout you?
It’s definitely not necessary, only a personal preference - I use it for smooth stopping down or up as I move through lighting environments vs stopping down with ISO or aperture.
