I loooooooooved this show from the first episode on Showcase. Blew me away. Us Canadians sure do know how to make great sci-fi and visual effects! First got turned on with Mainframe Entertainment with Reboot! Oh those were the days.
As a VFX TD on Continuum, I can tell you, that Reboot was one of the things that inspired me to go into VFX. It may look cringe nowdays, but back when it was on television, it was cutting edge. I remember seeing it, while in high school and saying: "This is what I want to do." And I ended up doing exactly that.
It's not just AE. It is a combination of several programs: After Effects, Cinema 4D, RealFlow, Maya and many others :) So 20 designers doing 1 minute scene about a week on the graphics hardware that takes place about 40 m2
