Hi @jeniiljejen Thanks for your question. Yes I've always drummed open left handed.. since I started playing around 4-5 years old. I am left handed and left footed as well.. Back then the kits that were around, were all set up right handed... I just played what was there.
Interesting! That is so cool! Your like the Joni Hendrix of drummers haha. I will teach myself to play open left handed as I think it has a lot of benefits.
Hi there - Love your channel - I just discovered it. I don't really play anymore but I have a vintage Premier Resonator kit, which I cherish. All the drums on my kit have cast hoops - your comparison shows really clearly that the cast hoops "ring" in a way that the flanged hoops don't. If you doubt that - take the hoop off the drum and hit it with a stick - it's like playing a (loud) triangle. You simply don't get that ring with the flanged hoop. I like that sound, but - I have to admit there have been quite a few times in the past when studio engineers have been quite pissed off about the extra "ring" on my kit. They love everything to be nice and flat. Or at least they did back in the 80's & 90's when I was a slightly more frequent visitor to the studio... I appreciate the "evaluation" you did on the vintage Premier kit - appropriate choice of music and appropriate style of playing. Keep up the good work. I wish there had been stuff like these videos available when I was starting out in the early 70's.
Hey thanks for the kind words friend. I work a lot in the studio... Its very important to supply drum gear that can deliver the sounds that engineers or producers need. In the studio it's not about what the Drummer wants... its all about what the song wants. The only thing I dont like about metal snare drums is their lower tunings aren't "warm" enough for me. Lower tunings on metal snares usually end up boxy and such. This one ain't too bad tho
Hey mate. Ya I hear you and feel the same to a degree... This bronze SLP is only 4.5 but it does have a nice bottom end. If you want warm you might want to try the starphonic copper snare. It is so lush. Anyway I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Cheers!
That was great man. I play open handed and have a very similar cymbal arrangement. Can you tell me which Drumeo play along track this was? I'm 66 and have only been drumming for a few years, self taught. I have been hacking away at guitar for over 30 years, but recently found that I have what I consider a pretty natural talent for drumming. Open handed just felt right to me as soon as I sat behind a kit. I'm left handed, but my right foot seems to be dominant, so I keep the snare on the left. You just earned a new subscriber. :)

Thanks for the kind words. To Record I used the Yamaha EAD10 mixed with an overhead and thats it. Those drums just tuned up themselves really. Slapped new heads on and turned screwsd a few times. To start I do like to tune the reso heads to the same tone of the shell. Batters tuned to suit
I am playing open handed, i am right handed so i play on a left handed drum kit but i use a remote hihat and thus my feet are set up for a right handed drummer and having toms running from right to the left and added some extra toms running from left to right surrounding the snare. Only because my technique sucks so it seems i am a better drummer. LOL
