Yeah, white racists try to have a go on a black man, a police officer, a local police officer interveins and the racists are free to go. It is the black police officer's own fault. That is the way we did back then.
Bacall had eyes that haunt you deep in the night, ...if you're lucky. Yet, it wasn't just the eyes that allowed her to stand toe-to-toe with Bogart in four films, it was the strength and acting ability, that shined through the "big screen." Some call it "charisma," or "sex-appeal," but essentially it was simply talent. Either way, you could see it in those beautiful "ganders" of hers. With Bacall, ...the eyes have it.
The acting is so good it doesn't appear that it's actors acting. Rod Steiger is one of my favourite actors R. I. P. & he like everyone else delivers a world class performance
The original script didn’t call for Tibbs to slap him back. The original actor Larry Gates respected Poitier so much he refused. Sidney added the extra slap to help Gates…
I learned later as an adult Sydney fought for this scene originally planned to be the typical take black man down many notches. Luckily now he was THE MAN then, they couldnt refuse him
Absolutely best scene in any and all cinema. As a kid of 12 I sat stunned for bout 30 seconds then cried with happiness for obvious reasons but also that they didn't kill him as was expected in cinema and also in life then. I lived as a white girl in a 'changing' neighborhood' but I always knew better then the BS I was taught in my society
Ironically that cop looks kind of like Caroll O'Connor. And they had a remake of this movie as a t.v series in the 80's with Caroll O'Connor as the lead cop.
I like Packy. He is willing to wait because he knows Tibbs is in a precarious situation. His friend, the leftie told him he's a good man. Tibbs told him to leave out of a mutual care.
