Hi I’m Jon and I'm a traditional wet shaving enthusiast! On my channel you'll find videos featuring wet shaving products like safety razors, straight razors, shaving brushes, soaps, aftershaves and more! You’ll also find episodes of the Lather Talk Podcast, with my co-host Gerard where we'll have interviews, as well as discussions on the state of the hobby.
Really interesting list. I particularly like the fact you gave the reasons for your choices (a list without reasons isn’t all that interesting imho). Many thanks!
The Athena and Ares are both more efficient and have more blade feel than the R6 plate. The Athena would be pretty close to what you'd get if you were to add a 7 or 8 plate, I think.
Great review as always. I have to say I was a little surprised about your impression of the Athena as being a little aggressive. I too typically favor milder razors, and I have found the Athena to be quite mild. I just was doing a comparison shave this morning between the game changer.68 and the Lupo .58 and I think the Athena is milder than either of those. Clearly, yet another example of your mileage may vary. But I did want to leave a comment as the Athena has earned a top five spot in my den out of 40+ razors.
Thanks for the review! That packaging is a stand out, wow. Wonder if they'll release a milder version for those with sensitive skin. Ah well, thanks for the vid!
Thanks for watching BLou! A milder option would be great, but one thing I forgot to mention is the tendency for the luxury tier of razors to side on the more aggressive side. I guess wetshavers with more disposable income want more blade feel ;)
Astra green(India and Russia) are both a pain to shave with for me. I have to go over the same areas many more times, resulting in a pretty poor shave(irritation). I've found blades a bit on the sharper end ultimately create a smoother shave for me. Nacet did fairly well, Gillette Platinum did well, Feathers in certain razors(like a Henson medium, spiral Tech). My number 1 is by far Permasharps. Work well in every razor, very smooth, sharp enough to not go over trouble spots too many times. They felt similar to Nacet to me, just with added smoothness. I'm still relatively new to this, so Permasharp was my first 100 pack. I saw it on amazon(I was checking often and still on the fence about buying a big pack) drop down to $9.80 from the usual ~$18 while showing it's the last in stock, so I bought it instantly of course. Funny how it was instantly replenished at $18 when I bought the "last pack" LOL
The Astra razor blades are THE ABSOLUTE WORST blades ever made. I don’t know what it was but they left my face felling raw with little red bumps every time I used them. I tried other blades to give my skin time to heal but when I went back to using them the same problem returned. I will never use them again…..they are nothing but trash!!!!
Just bought me a bottle 🙌 60 mL for $125. Hope I didn’t overpay but since it’s discontinued I’m not too bothered by that price. Especially if it’s as good everybody says
@@Nero-KD yea I have. I really enjoy it. That’s why I blind bought this one because it sounds like more of what I’m looking for than the original with the ginger etc. (I was looking for something more versatile with the option to wear in the summer as well)
BARRISTER and Mann's Braeburn is a real good Apple Scent too. I got a sample of Stateside Sonata from Peters open house and will try it tomorrow. It came with a small vial of splash too. Now I'm psyched to try it.
@@gabrielmassini2238 I’ve only owned from D&G Italian Love, The One EdT, and D&G Pour Homme, which I didn’t keep for very long because it was a little too “mature” smelling to me.
I haven't owned the GC 68 in awhile, but based off memory, it would be the equivalent of the 3 or 4 plate. The 76 has the efficiency of the 6 plate, but with less blade feel. Finally the 86 has both more blade feel and efficiency than any of the Rockwell plates. Hope that helps!
My top five would be: - Feather - Voshkod - Feather - Kia - Feather I got a 20 or so sample pack from Amazon; some of them were so bad, half way through a shave, I changed back to a Feather and bent the rest of the others in half and trashed them.
Thank you for the video, have a new Konsul in the rhodium arriving this week. Will begin at lvl 1 and 2 : ) I'm using the new Ultima base A&E Signature, Woods and Spices, and Vanilla in the glass jars, along with many House Of Mammoth beautifully engineered scents: Indigo Tobacconist Smash Rumble Uitwaaien Dammusi Voices Hygge only recently discovered in the tusk base along with your help John. Everett is wonderfully captured sunshine you must try it. : ) Subscribed. Also have the HOM Beloved, yet it's simply great and not spectacular like the other House of Mammoth offerings, an outlier like you said, so I'll give it away to a friend. : )
How would you compare the efficiency of the Titanium Slim to the Karve Overlander or Yates 921? Which is your favorite Timeless? Just received my Overlander, it was worth the wait for the custom shorter handle. It seems like an autopilot razor that can use a variety of blades. The timeless aluminum slant is awesome, hands down my favorite aluminum and slant.
I wanted some more efficiency out of the Ti Slim and didn’t keep that or any other Timeless Razors. Overlander is one of my favorites and I’m glad to hear you’re getting along with it!
@@Latherhog I guess I'll pass looking into the Ti slim lol. I really like the timeless AL slant and have a used Timeless .68 scalloped bar. Sounds like Yates would be the way to go if i wanted a Titanium, I like the merica and wining razors and the 921 has been on my radar. I have a 3D printed plastic razor from Croatia on the way (Superior Cuts can find on eBay/ ETSY) and if it's any good ill buy their new aggressive plates.
@@Latherhog How do you maintain your brass Karve overlander? I disassemble every use to dry thoroughly and scrub occasionally with a tooth paste or castile soap.
To the question of whether Artisans reflect on their social media presence being a net positive or negative for the business, speaking from personal experience I can say that I do it all the time, and still am not sure what the answer is. At the end of the day people's personalities and beliefs are as varied as their shave preferences, and so one person's 'Pretty cool guy' is another person's ' Attention seeking dbag' and one person's 'Very knowledgeable about their craft' is another's 'Self-righteous know-it-all'. Basically, unless you have the personality of a bowl of raw oatmeal, then as soon as you put yourself out there you are 100% guaranteed to polarize and alienate at least some percentage of your customer base. So with that in mind, I think the best we can really hope for is to be true to our genuine selves and not be a d*$K in the process. Awesome discussion as always guys. Have a blessed weekend!
I have some issues with most fragrances and I avoid lanolin, so that really cuts down on who I can buy from. I really wish I could support a lot of great people, but I'm very limited in my options. In terms of personality, I relate most to Doug. If he went to my high school he would have definitely been part of my weirdo friend group of theatre freaks and band geeks who were more artsy types. I mean...we both carry googly eyes. I tend to like more gourmands and stuff that's not overly serious. PAA, Catie's Bubbles, DentonMajik, and Hoffman's make up the majority of my collection. I really want more Van Yulay as well because Monica is another one who is not afraid to explore the less serious side.
Thanks for sharing Lee! Makes sense that if you’d want to support an artisan who you could see in your friend group, then read a lot of people say, “grab a beer with.”
