Hi, just few news about the Caudron: The exhaust system was received and welded few weeks ago. The mass balance was adjusted and the final weight is 35kg with a load of 340g/dm². This is is flyable but too risky, espescially regarding the cost of the material that is inside. I am therefore starting the design of a version 2 of the airframe, trying to decrease its weight and there is some margin. The first fly of this machine is reported ! However, I learnt a lot building this v1, many systems and devices have been validated and doubts erased. The v2 design and build will therefore be mutch faster and this is far to be the most expensive part of the project. Aircraft development is what it is, I consider this v1 as a non flying prototype...
I have seen the real Caudron at Le Bourget last year. Great plane! Yours looks pretty much like the original one. I wish you all the best for the maiden flight!
Nice.. I see that the engine is an addition of several, thus can be made bigger.. (love to see your 6 cylinder model.. then add a scavenger turbo.. also at least a GoPro in the cockpit when it flies (maybe one that looks sideways also).
I'm so daZzled with this aircraft & engine combo I don't mind if it never starts... I'm happy! The only time I was worried is when "Mr. Prop's" cigarett almost when out. Good save!
I originally designed and built this plane for a Fiala 120 IL. However when I tried to equilibrate it with the Fiala, 3kg were missing in the nose and this is about the mass difference between the Fiala and the Kolm. Then, I decided to add horses instead of dead mass. To avoid too heavy modifications to the fuselage, I had to chose the short version of the IL230, without electric starter to fit in. This finally does not seem to be an issue as at the second start (not in this video), the engine started up easily...
