Ok, so you worked for Stephanie Izard, I'm guessing, based on a very quick Google search of Top Chef and Iron Chef from Chicago. I hope she was nice! Also: you might know this by now, but The Beef is based on Mr. Beef, which I'm sure, as someone who worked on the food scene in Chicago, you've heard of. The guy who runs that joint grew up with the dude who created this show, and Richie (the guy whose name you don't want to remember) is based on him.

I understand your anger towards Richie but please know that his character isn’t that difficult to read. He is an asshole because it is his way of coping with his own insecurities and Shitty feelings about himself while also dealing with everything that life has thrown his way. His divorce, his best friend killing himself, his second family falling apart (second family as in michaels family), raising his daughter through the chaos, etc. he has a lot on his plate and this is why he uses anger to cope and although that isn’t a good thing, trust me that he knows this and is trying to work on it, he is bearable (no pun intended), he just needs to stop and self analyze a little… it’s just gonna take a few episodes😂

Has nothing to do with her being a “woman of color”😂 . The minority isn’t even a “minority” anymore. It’s just her not being comfortable commanding new people, I. A shit system environment. It’s annoying yes. I worked in food & beverage for years too for the Hard Rock with baristas, pastries and it’s stressful . Mostly with new people . But it’s not that dramatic. It happens. It can be annoying. Just gotta breathe . The women thing has nothing to do with it, except when woman groan and act dramatic or blow things out of proportion

Loved the outburst around 1:07:00. You're completely right. Carmie is speaking from a position of privilege from a person who has never personally felt privileged because of his own hardships. Looking forward to future reactions. Lots of character growth in this show.

Love the reactions. Even if you don't continue with the vids, I do hope you continue to watch the show. Ritchie is definitely the "man to hate" for the first season. Which is why by the end of the second season he is the main person you root for. Just, just feel the flow.

I also work in a kitchen and I'm ready to retire in a few years. I've seen the show, but I'm tired of the restaurant and foodie culture so it just seems like watching work after work. All the drama bull of fighting over favorite pots and pans and breaking in stagieres and sous chefs and bullying and yelling over trivial things like an omelette and tantrums with people leaving in anger during their shift. The restaurant business sucks and it makes it's money by nickel and diming everyone from suppliers to employees to clients. Really the first thing I think when I see cooking shows: where's your hairnet, beardnet, gloves, take off your watch and ring, button up your shirt , wash your hands, get a new rag... It's all just unglamorous hard work in a hot, dangerous environment.

thats how this show does so good an ramping up the anxiety, it does kitchen anxiety well, you can relate to the crazy shit in the kitchen so easliy, then theres all these people that get wrapped up in their own shit and communication breaks down, when i worked the line, man idk how many times someone (sometimes me included) would go off for something that is typical kitchen behavior (little pranks, shit talking, dropping food or tableware) that is fine 90% of the time but when someone is having a shitty day and people are being shitty to them like Tina, Richie, and Carmy were to Sydney it builds up until you end up going off on the wrong person for something that shouldnt have been that big of a deal, especially when youre young and/or new and want nothing less than to be viewed as inexperienced, vulnerable, or fallible, so you never ask for help, advice, or assistance so you push it until you fuck up majorly and hope to god there is a Marcus that doesnt make it as big a deal as you feared and tells you "its ok just keep going." Trauma bonding is a hell of a thing and you can get it working in almost any kitchen.

Love your reaction. I've lost count how many reactions to this show I've seen but I think only one other reactor was an actual chef. So the insight is a great bonus. Hang in there, it gets better (even if more anxious!).

As someone who grew up with restaurant parents and wanted to be a pâtissier your reactions are giving me life. Just the anger you come out with at scenes where it's appropriate is great, hope you keep up with this and just subbed. I'm looking forward to your Worst Chef's vid next as it's one I hate watch with my mum and can't believe anyone can be that clueless in the kitchen at their ages :D

So the guy who plays Neil Fak (the mechanic they have on call to fix things) is Matty Matheson, who in real life is an actual chef and restaurateur. He also serves as a producer and culinary consultant on the show. He didn't want to portray a chef but like you said gotta have a handyman.

Absolutely keep on going. You are just getting introduced to these people and you'll have your first impressions. By the end of the season those impressions may change because you will see the growth and character arcs. Some of the best episodes IMHO are in season 2. The acting is brilliant and it becomes obvious why these people won awards for the show.

I have to say after your first reaction I was really impressed with the little pieces of context you brought up that I (as someone in Europe who also is not a chef) would never have noticed like the Mayonnaise, which is something that adds more context to Carmy's effect on the Beef that I never realised on my first watch of the show.
