Nietzsche is partly misunderstood here in relation of how his ideas relate to Rock Music of the 70s and onwards. Neither the Dionysian concept of early Nietzsche in his “The Birth of Tragedy”, nor the falsely misinterpreted “fascist element” of older Nietzsche (last question in the video) are sufficient for the evaluation of the role, personal fate and potential for projection and identification of the rock stars between 1970s and present. The missing key can to be found in the § 370 of the „Joyous Science „titled “On romantic pessimism”. The speaker did not mention it. Well, this may be due to a lack of knowledge. One must read the whole Nietzsche and several times. One sees other perspectives in his work when one gets older. Or it was omitted due to the sympathy towards the public. The attitudes of romantic pessimism are exposed by Nietzsche in this lengthy aphorism as an expression of decadence. That is why he parted from Wagner and Schopenhauer - both were decadents for him in his older age. His “Dionysian” element cannot be synchronized with today's Frankenstein (a romantic novel of an 18-year-old Mary Shelley) and almost always pessimistic) ecstasies of rock musicians or rock concert audience. Yes, he almost already sees angels and flies away as one of them. Both latter types are certainly more hysterical or catatonic than Dionysian in Nietzsche’s sense of the word. In his mature works, Nietzsche turned categorically away from his early misunderstanding of himself, of Wagnerian Music, of Schopenhauer. (Ecce homo, Der Fall Wagner) That means for today's lecture: most of the modern rock stars were or are decadents in Nietzsche’s perspective. They represent types of romantic pessimists. Many need a great kick of sound to feel alive and then, sometime later, a dreamy soft web of sound to escape from reality to some artistic beyond, to an afterlife, to another dimension, into a drug induced vision or finally, sometimes as burnouts behind stage, into alcoholic oblivion. The reason for this downfall of their souls and characters is the disarray of body instincts. They represent a delicate but dying flower of the West European Civilization - especially British. Some of them feel it deeply and are clever enough, even wise, to make themselves up into an artwork, Their real person would be - even for themselves - unbearable, maybe even unknown. Yet such an escape deepens only the rift, the chaos of instincts grows, the multiple personality splits even further. The mercy of a drug induced death or some crazy adventure that leads to death is a morally accepted and in the rock community as an even admired solution. This they uphold the romantic hero archetype, the beautiful crown of the prophet, in a meaningless and ugly world, shines on…! That is why the “Antichrist” of Nietzsche, in which he attacked the institution of the Church but not Jesus himself (a countryside hiking carpenter archetype after all) could be read - with a lot of poetic freedom - as a defense of some rusty country rock bands you can visit around the corner against the Mega Spectacles of Rock Business today. Also, some early rockers of the 60s and 70s could still walk in the sunshine of innocent beginnings. They were putting to song and music classical themes of poetry - beauty of nature, truly felt love, social engagement. But at closer look, we would find, they were also physically and emotionally more or less still harmonious types. After ca 1975, as the general public becomes more decadent, it was asking for more decadent remedies. The hysterical “walls of music” (metal, punk and what comes after that on the scale of bizarre and pure noise) got larger and larger. Apart from a massive shock for physical senses and a wild shaking of emotions, the romantic pessimists yearns also for some total self-forgetfulness, some nirvana without an ego, a numbing softness. And behold - there is a remedy also here: electronic hieroglyphs of rock music lead and suck him into some mystical afterlife, into beautiful far off spaces or into some perceptual labyrinths of awe. The commercial music industry, after the initial surprise (66 - 73 maybe), manages the decadent demand of the decadent public always with good profit. A dreamy 70s romantic on grass is much better manageable than some hot-blooded Byron on his way to freedom and social justice. But hope is always there: A healing from partial decadence - induced by a decadent society - for robust characters - is always possible. Take your own instruments and play for yourself and later maybe with friends while taking a break from your handcraft work or farming work in a truly romantic countryside. Do not perform. Do not style yourself.
