What is a Book Flip for You?

A Book Flip For You exists to expose (if not seen before) some photography work to the public (meaning probably to 1 or 2 of you). Primarily street, social landscape, documentary photography, a few landscape works out there that may not have gotten much airplay. And of course my choice of books are subjective. The choice of books are from my own bent which I cannot escape, also it's due to limited book resources. But one thing I know for sure, Street photography (whether you like that term or not) is the greatest photographic genre of all time. These book flips will consist of books that I particularly appreciate and enjoy or photo books that I thought were okay yet thought photographers could learn from. Some of the photographic poetry are in your face, some are intentionally subtle, some very serious, others pun-filled, some brilliant, some stray from photographic cliches, and some all the above.

Just came from Daido Moriyama’s interview for LifeWear Magazine (he mentions this book). I haven’t bought this book yet, but the images do look incredible. Thanks for sharing! 📷❤️

Thank you for this. I've been trying to figure out the photographer behind this amazing collection I first came across decades ago, when I didn't really pay attention to photogs so much as the pictures they created. Tried telling myself in the time I was looking for it that it couldn't be Gilden--not really a fan of his other stuff--but this flip showed me who indeed took the pictures. Now I gotta get it.

Edit: The copy I purchased was NOT this edition, and is in fact very different. My edition was published in July 2023, and at least two photos--the two photos which really struck out for me in the original--are not there. I feel slighted. . .and a little sick at how the 'editors' would take a book and remake it so much without letting people know that it's different.

'Still photography is the clumsiest way to exercise imagination to illustrate literary ideas. Anybody with a pencil beats you. Period. It's tantamount to driving a nail in with a saw when you can use a hammer.' Gary Winogrand

'[A photograph] is the illusion of a literal description of what the camera saw ... It has no narrative ability. You don't know what happened. You know how a piece of time and space looked to a camera. But it has to be rational. It has to compel you to suspend your disbelief because it's a lie. It's reduced. It's black and white. It's two dimensional. It's a lie! If there's such a thing as truth, it's a lie.' Gary Winogrand

Thanks a lot ! I remember not having bought this book because in the french edition, the pictures are badly cut between the two pages. I think the book was made with glue rather than sewing. Greet and important book. RIP William Klein, such an inspiration...

Thank you for this! Sadly, I can never casually find his work in any mega-book store today. (And many others like Moriyama, Winogrand or W. Eugene Smith, etc.) Instead, the shelves are littered with garbage like "100 ways on becoming a better photographer" etc. It is astonishing to me that books like this have to be 'special ordered'. SUBSCRIBED!

Bruh! that Ralph Gibson burn. @30:00 I think this really encompasses this whole talk and reveals more about Winogrand's way of seeing.

Ralph actually has a Winogrand quote about his work in the back of his book "Deus Ex Machina". "Guys like you are what is wrong with photography.". It seems like he appreciated the quote or at least found it funny. It's included among quotes from other photographers he had talked to and said he agreed with everything they said. Love both of their work! Garry's jab at the titles was hilarious.
