Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Based out of Utah! Come tag along and join us for updates, tips, and exciting adventures. I am not a professional in any way, but would like to educate and bring my experiences to the table regarding this breed.
Please can you share your breeder with me? My husband and I are looking for a responsible and good breeder to get a puppy! Thank you so much! Mila is so beautiful 🤩
Please do more melodic dubstep and future bass sets! I’m learning a lot about how to mix this genre by watching people like making sets like this! Much love man. There’s not enough people mixing this genre on RU-vid so I don’t have a lot of sources to learn from!
Luckily my wife had dogs growing up so we used one of their kennels which was used on a small/medium sized dog. Then when she got about 4 months, upgraded again. I wish i knew the sizes, but they were all kennels gifted to us by family and friends who don't have dogs anymore...but the one we are using now that she is full grown looks to be the largest kennel metal/collapsible kennel you can get on the market. She loves it and will actually walk in herself when she gets tired.
How did you guys correct the biting? When did it go away fully (if it did)? We've just brought home a 9-week-old swissy and he's a real nipper - hard to have him around kids.
I'll have to make an update video soon, but how we corrected this was to not praise or pet when they bite. In their minds, when we pet them, it means what they're doing is good and to keep doing it. And I know this part may seem weird, but react like a dog when they nip or bite. example: yelp, pull back and ignore. When you watch how other dogs play and things get too rough, that's exactly what they do. Not only are you teaching your puppy that she's being too rough, but also socializing her to learn and understand. What you don't want to happen is for your puppy to not know the signs and then get in a bad situation with another dog or person. the puppy stages is crucial for socialization and learning, so take full advantage and don't let up on training and socializing
My Tesla is the best dog ever. I love the swiss mountain dog. But she has broke out in like hot spots? I was just wondering if you also have found this by your experience?
Hi! The only thing that I can think of is an allergy reaction? I haven’t experienced this, but I’m a party of a swissy group page and that’s what they were suggesting.
Our 8 month old male is ~90% potty trained. We still have the jumping, mouthing stuff which has been improved upon from obedience class. He's about 90 pounds now. He's a rowdy dog and loves rough-housing at the dog park but has never gotten out of hand. Being larger means he doesn't get picked on too often. We live close to the breeder and are looking to get him trained for draft competitions and maybe herding. He's a good dog (more often now) and I'm glad we got him.
I love that! I need to do an update video, but our Mila is a little over 9 months and is starting to enter teenage rebellion. we will need to cover that :)
Hi! Thanks for your videos. As you mentioned, there's not too much information about the breed. I'm researching if this breed is the right match for me. Do you think this dog would fit for apartment living? Do they shed as much as a German Shepherd? Are they as kind as a Great Dane or more guardians as a Rottweiler? Do they have too much energy as a Doberman or as a Great Dane?
Hi, I've been told that this breed can do well in an apartment, but it's alwasy preferred to give them enough space. Mila likes to sleep on the couch majority of the day and get her exercise from a daily walk and running around our backyard. If you can give them the exercise they need, then you should be fine. Their hair is not as long as a German Shephard, but they do shed due to them being double coated. They are a watch dog, but not a guard dog. They will bark at everything new and are very loud, but she is not aggressive and is a big teddy bear. Of course that comes down to socializing and training.
I lost one of my dogs to cancer 8 months ago. I never found out what breed he was. Anyway, the more I read about Swissies, the more I think that my Copper had to be part Swiss. He didn’t have the traditional colors but he had the brown and white variation. Same face, same ears. He had strong prey drive and I always thought his bark was so weird…. Then I saw a video of a Swiss barking and it sounded just like my boy. Maybe I’m reaching but if I could find another dog like Copper, it’d be like having his spirit back.
I love this a Swiss channel❤ but please be careful with the prong collar however effective they can damage the trachea. A chain slip collar is another alternative. Beautiful baby…
Thanks for the support! We will look into a chain slip lead. Our breeder says our dog can be a show dog and she uses chain slip leads when doing that. So it’ll be good to train her to go into “show mode” when that’s on.
My swissy passed away this July (he was 12yrs). He was my everything and I miss him terribly. It’s great to watch someone on the opposite end just starting out with a new pup. I wish you the best of luck with your beautiful Mila
Sorry for your loss. We lost our Maximus last October, he was my everything too. But, we picked up 10 week old Swissy in late November. He is wonderful! Our first Swissy. Looking forward to watching this one grow.
We are trying to pick a Swissie breeder (our first dog) - how important are AKC breeder merit levels, bronze gold, etc.? Also, how did you choose between a girl and a boy? What are the pros and cons?
For our breeder, she has a high merit and very reputable. We never asked about what status she was, nor did we know anything about it. But she was well known in the swissy community and very close friends with my friend who recommended her. After meeting with her multiple times and seeing her dogs and puppies, we knew she was the one. As for male and female, size is a pretty decent difference. Our breeder also compared males as the goofy lover and females the more composed and willing to impress. But that’s just her opinion with her dogs she’s bred. Every dog will be different and have a different personality. We love our dog and we were wanting a make. But we fell in love with her and after her evaluation and temperament test, we knew she’d fit best with our lifestyle and what we want.
Awesome. Did you do the evaluation and temperament assessment yourself? Or is that something a breeder does? We have to drive quite a bit to a breeder so may not have a chance to see the puppy in advance. Great videos, keep them coming!
Our breeder did it. We had a long interview about us, our lifestyle, and experience. She then used that and recommended a couple puppies and explained each one of their temperaments and personalities that she could see. Remember how we wanted a male? Well his temperament and personality didn’t really vibe with us, but milas did. And now we are best friends and the most popular dog in our neighborhood!
Hi, lovely Swissy you have there. Our Swissy pup is arriving soon and I was wondering how much dry kibble you are feeding a day in Ounces now she's 4 to five months old ?
Hi! Ill cover this in the next update video, but what we do is 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) a day at 1 cup of kibble for up to a year. Once they stop growing after a year, we take it down to 2 meals a day. Of course you can give them the occasional treat, like raw egg, blue berries, etc. again I’ll cover all of this in my next video 👍
Thanks for sharing. We're very keen on getting a Greater Swiss. We heard they can be stubborn and slow to mature. But very loving dogs and calm guarders. Do please let us know how you get on. Thanks
I'm getting a Swissy from a Fall litter and I can't wait! I lost both my German Shepherds fairly close together due to old age and I miss having a dog in the house.
