As a Malayali who has lived in the United States for the last 15 years, I take pride in being both Indian and Malayali. However, I have observed that some people from my community, as well as from other Indian communities such as Punjabis and Tamils, sometimes engage in behaviors that are perceived negatively in the host country. These behaviors include cutting in lines, breaking laws, and disrespecting local customs and public spaces. Such actions can reinforce negative stereotypes and lead to animosity from others in society. Few examples While not all individuals from these communities engage in the behaviors described, the actions of a few can have a disproportionate impact on the perception of the group as a whole. Here are some examples: Queue Cutting: This behavior is often observed in public places like airports, restaurants, and events. Cutting in line without regard for others is generally frowned upon in Western cultures, where waiting one's turn is a norm. Breaking Laws: Incidents of not following traffic rules, littering, or disregarding public property can create a negative impression. This behavior contrasts with the high value placed on order and cleanliness in many Western societies. Disrespecting Public Spaces: The use of public restrooms and other facilities in a manner not consistent with local norms (e.g., leaving them dirty, or bringing in items not typically used in those spaces) can lead to complaints and resentment from locals. Cultural Imposition: While it’s natural to preserve one’s cultural identity, imposing cultural practices that clash with the host country’s norms can lead to friction. For instance, spitting in public or playing loud music in residential areas might be seen as disruptive. While some of us prioritize adapting to the local lifestyle and respecting American and Canadian cultures, others seem intent on imposing their own cultural practices, sometimes in ways that clash with societal norms here. This dissonance contributes to the negative perception of our community as a whole. It’s essential that we reflect on our actions and how they impact our reputation in a foreign land. If we wish to be respected, we must also respect the cultures and laws of the countries we live in.
Well from my experience, Indians are highly respected in the United States for their IT, Medical, Mathematical and Engineering skills. In the East of US where I lived, people just have a basic belief that an Indian can solve any laptop issue 🤣 I think it squarely depends on what kind of people you take in from any country.
