As much as I admire Mark Lanegan I think he would be difficult to work with. Gary and Van seemed more down to earth.

Totally agree. Lanegan has contributed much to the music world. I think he might have been a damaged, self-centred arsehole though. He certainly left a trail of destruction, according to his own autobiography.

Gary is a good guy and I think Mark actually had respect for him. At first they probably had a rocky beginning, but when they made Sweet Oblivion Mark actually talks highly of Gary. In Barrett Martins book he expresses how surprised he was when he read what Mark wrote about Gary. Barrett thinks Gary is great guitar player and a good friend.

Sorry to say it, but Mark, just like Layne, f*cked things up for everyone else. Dying young - especially Layne - doesn't erase the damage they did.

100%. Page after page of Lanegan's book reads like a compendium of wasted potential and squandered opportunities, just so he could keep getting fcuked up. And he knew it. No denying the man's talent, but he comes off as a selfish prick with an enormous chip on his shoulder.

Loved this interview. Very cool to hear Lee's perspective on some Trees stories, especially having read Mark Lanegan's and Barrett Martin's books. I grew up in the Tree's hometown of Ellensburg and always looked up to those guys.

Fantastic interview. The Screaming Trees/Das Damen/Superchunk at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit 1991 were basically my first concert past Detroit Symphony Orchestra performances in my teen years. The Trees did an in-store appearance at the time of their 1991 concert at Neptune Records in Royal Oak, MI. I still have my (blue vinyl) LP of Buzz Factory signed by Van, Lee Conner and Mark Lanegan from then. Thanks for this interview.

There simply was no making Mark happy. He had a grudge against the world and everything in it from the get-go. From the tone of his book, he pegged Gary as some mama's boy weirdo basement dweller, when in reality Gary's songwriting was Marks "ticket out" of the small town he so hated. Trees were a great band - the best thing that came out of the Seattle scene in the early-mid 90's, IMHO and Gary seems like a cool, approachable guy in this interview. I'd love to hear some new stuff he's been working on.

Funny, the album they considered crap is one of, if not my favorite recordings of all time. A masterpiece. The way Mark spoke about Gary in his book was bullshit. Mark seemed like the dick bag.

I had just listened to Lanagan's audiobook and I'm in the middle of Barrett Martin's book about his time in the Trees, and I kind of get those same vibes. I think the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Because remember, Van didn't want Gary in the band at first. There was a reason for that. And in both books, there are some stories where Lanagan comes off as real self-centered and didn't fully appreciate the opportunity he had at that time.

I’ve listened to Marks and Barrett Martins biographies and it’s interesting to hear them talk about their relationships with Lee. Mark sounds like he couldn’t stand Lee, but Barrett describes him as a nice guy, amazing song writer, and an essential part of the Screaming Trees. After watching this interview I have to say I think Barrett’s point of view is more of an accurate portrayal.

I grew up with record being a synonym for album, a collection of songs available on various media. Vinyl was one of the (and the predominant) media options. I think this slowly changed through the 90's, as CDs became predominant.
