You can use Thomastik Flatwound strings to save the frets from scratches. This is basically modeled after an Electrified Gibson L5 (The K5 Mandocello is modeled after the L5), so it's basically an Electrified Cutaway K5.

Cool, and thanks for the Lessons on the other Videos. I had DiPinto guitars in Philadelphia make me a custom Mandocello out of one of his Galaxie IV guitars and I love it,,as I always wanted to Do "Rick Nielsen" stuff. now with your lessons,,I can play along "Semi Perfectly" (I`m still fumbly)..
Hmm. I'll have to come out. It's less of a pain in the ass to go see live local music when I don't have to sneak in the back door everywhere. 😂 sounds great!
What you hear in the video is acoustic. I am not plugged in - you're hearing it through the mic from either an iPad or iPhone (I forget which 'camera' I used for the audio). It is thin on the the low end, as the body is relatively small. You're not going to get the same bass response as a cello, unless you have a cello-sized body. It's the same as those guitar-like acoustic basses - they never have the same low end as a proper upright bass...but they are much easier to transport. Can't have it all.
Thank you! For these ukulele arrangements I can learn the song and rough in the arrangement in one session between 10 minutes to an hour or so, depending on the complexity. I'll let it marinate for a couple of days for rehearsing and refining before recording. In this case, the main verse, chorus and bridge lay very nicely, and came together quickly. The back third after the key change, however, is not in a great key, and the melody spans a huge range, which is difficult to accommodate when the ukulele has such a small range.
Thanks.. That album got me through a tough time as a kid. That song is still a fav of mine. I appreciate that you put this out. I’m gonna try the 12 string approach you mentioned. Rock on!
