I'm Pete, and here at Builtbypete you'll find plenty of videos on various DIY and Tech topics.
I'm an engineer and trained with the MOD in the RAF where I got to play with some cool and exciting tech. Ive always been curious about technology and love to build things myself. So I thought I’d create a channel that focuses on DIY and technology.
If DIY and Tech are the sorts of things you enjoy then please subscribe to the channel and hit the notification button so you get updates when I upload new videos.
It won't be as fast as a purchased NAS as it's using SMB. In theory SMB could give 100MB/s. It would depend on the performance also of the drive you use. I use a cheap USB drive with poor rw performance, but I still get 100mbps. With a good quality SSD I'm sure I'd get more.
I'm not sure but it only be available on the Asus merlin firmware. I have been running with merlin for so long now I can't remember which settings are just on merlin and not on the OEM firmware.

I have received a response from Asus re: inaccurate speeds on my BE98 when testing my 8Gb service from my ISP, which is quite strange and disheartening that their "cutting-edge" routers aren't able to test tru 10Gb speeds due to the onboard application: "due to limitation on current built-in speedtest function on GUI, the result may not be able to reach 8Gbps even if the router is actually getting this speed. For more accurate result, please try to do speedtest on devices that supports more than 8G speed connected to the router directly by Ethernet. Please understand that we are working on to improve the speedtest function in router for supporting higher network speed. Sorry for the inconvenience."
The router just doesn't seem to be able to process a speed test. I have found it better to do via a web based service. Here's how I do mine for a more accurate reading: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LrKQmLo4X1E.htmlsi=PGGo6RYCpdN00MkD
Hello mate... recently had EE broadband fitted to my new apartment.... (didn't have much choice) I've had issues receiving the router... long story short the royal mail keeps sending it back. Anyway... I was toying with the idea of buying a similar router that you have in this video. 2 questions... 1..do I need a router with built in modem... 2 ... are the settings the same as in your video? (EE and BT) Thank you in advance
Hi. I've never used EE broadband before. But, if they fitted an ONT in your home then you could be able to connect an ethernet cable from the ONT to your router a d then configure it ok.
Have tried it but WiFi speeds are. Slooow, in the linksys it's fine. Maybe the power line adaptors linking the 2 can't handle. It even tho they are 1gb
Why the PE through terminal blocks don't have built-in pin slots for making a common PE stack? On the right side, you wil have one live wire, one null wire and one pe wire entering. How will you distribute the PE if the blocks dont have pin slots?
Thank you so much for this - I was able to grab 4 of these plus a flasher off Ali for about $20. Flashed them successfully for a net cost of 5 bucks each.
Hi friend. Is it necessary to connect the two routers primary and secondary by an ethernet cable for the system to work or is it at the time of configuration only? Thanks
Hi. When you add the extender the router will identify it and add as a mesh node. You don't need ethernet you can opt to use WiFi as the backhaul. Obviously either cable will give the fastest performance.
@@Builtbypete hi friend. I tried with two asus router rt-ax86u as primary and rt-ac68u as secondary. all this works except that my smartphones do not pick up the 5ghz wifi despite that they are compatible. do you have any idea where the problem may be coming from. Thanks
@@Builtbypete previously we have Sky and Vodafone in two parts of the house. They did upgrade Vodafone with fibre and Sky still connected to copper. Does it mean Openreach would need to fit another external box?
Use the email address and password connected to the Microsoft account. Just a note that if you normally use a PIN to log into the machine you're connecting to, you'll need to log in to it with the Microsoft account password at least once.
@@ElmoPlayss Thats strange. Is your windows computer compatible with remote desktop. Remote desktop is available on Windows 10 & 11 professional or higher as well as Enterprise. and Server editions.
@@Builtbypete How does this work when people have solar and batteries? The wire showing the load into the house is going to show minimal electricity. Do they connect to a different wire, and where would you find it?
I guess it depends on setup. If the batteries and or solar get to the house via an inverter, then you could put the sensor son the output of the inverter. Or if the house has a cross over switch you could put the sensors on the output of the cross over.
The problem with these systems is they are all trying to do the same thing job and compete. I’m getting a heat pump installed so I will use the Shelly to monitor load and hopefully use it with my Ecoflow system to direct some solar power towards it.
Hi, just quick one, should the red light be on when the switch is on? I had a situation that with the switch on there is still supply as normal but red light is off. Thank you
Amazing Video but i have just 1 concern. Why use windows remote when i cannot work outside the network i am connected too? then it is actually not remote then. That is definitely bad. if it is remote then it should be that i can work without my laptop close to me. Microsoft should look into that though.
Great video but way too many wires for a little tiny box... You will struggle to get all the wires in, it will look messy and also it will heat up. You got at least 36 wires going in there kkkkkkkkk Personally I AM THINKING 200mm X 200mm at least...
