Someone, somewhere, on this thread said that the Orthodox do not call themselves "Catholic". This is not true. They do refer to themselves as Catholic. If you want a standard reference work written by Orthodox scholars, I would refer you to Τα δογματικά και συμβολικά μνημεία της ορθοδόξου καθολική εκκλησίας. The nitpicking about small c and large c does nobody any good, just creates more unnecessary division. There are good Christians everywhere in spite of differences in theological interpretations of the texts. To further muddy the waters, those early Christians would separate themselves from the many heretical sects of the time by proclaiming that they were Catholics, and not one of the various sects that sprung up. Think of all the various and contrary opinions expressed on this site. They all can't be right. Somebody must be wrong.

Catholics are not all roman, the byzantine and formerly celtic rites are all part of the same catholic church. The term Roman Catholic only refers to the Roman rite of Catholicism. Lutherans are not part of that as they all afirm certain catholic doctrine that Luther disagreed with like the Pope, purgatory. praying to saints and more. But while I wouldnt say Lutherans are Catholic they have the closest theological beliefs and practices to Catholics out of the protestants ( except angelicans/ episcapals). I would argue that theologically Lutherans and Catholics have more in common than Baptists and Lutherans but the ancient protestant/ catholic rivalry leads most modern lutherans and catholics to assume they are oposite which is unfortunate. As a Catholic I have deep respect for my Lutheran brothers and sisters

The big or small c doesn't count, 8n those days there weren't anything big or small letter as it was meant today The Word CATHOLIC as it was meant and why it was meant is the one as CATHOLIC today believes. I was protestant once, having read the Early Church Fathers and come to understanding without a shred of a doubt THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS THE ONLY CHURCH ESTABLISHED BY JESUS CHRIST, MY LORD AND SAVIOR ❤❤❤❤❤

Here is the other thing that burns me. You are trying to say Lutherans are Catholics but you deny Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. How dare you say you have communion like the catholic church when you have grape juice and crackers or whatever you have. What you are doing out of ignorance, or pride is telling Jesus what He can and cant do. Your making a mockery of the gift of the Holy Eucharist. Do you realize that? There have been 1000's Eucharist miracles that have converted people. Reread or read John 6:53. Jesus never said it was a symbol. That is what protestants say. So dont go around saying lutherans are catholics. They are not even close. Read the rest of John 6 to the end. You protestants are the ones that cant believe Jesus is the Holy Eucharist just like the disciples that left Christ. Arrogant.
@WilberWiley

Your argument doesnt make sense. If you want to be Catholic, join the Catholic Chrurch. What you are doing is playing a word game. Using your logic, Lutherians are Catholic and Catholics are Lutherans. Thats impossible. Besides Lutherans do not have apostolic succession, therefore you ordinations are invalid. Just join the catholic church or leave the catholic church alone. Historians place martin luther in the catagory of Heretic. Read Hillaire Bellocs book the Greath Heresies. All protestant faiths are heresies of the catholic church. Sorry Islam also falls into the category. Padre Pio the great mystic of the Catholic Church, said he saw martin luther burning in hell. You are playing with fire. You have no relationship with God, I can tell by your arguements. Repent and join the catholic church and receive the great gifts of Jesus "The sacraments". They are real. Also if you blaspheme the Blessed Mother, you are doomed. If you insult the Blessed Mother, you insult Jesus. I never could understand why protestants dont get that.

Of course Lutherans aren't Catholic. It's an heretical sect denying several parts of the Catholic Faith as handed down from Our Lord through Scripture and Apostolic Tradition. They are "pick and choose"-ers, aka. heretics. They don't hold the fullness of truth. Catholic means wholistic and their faith isn't whole.

Nope, we say that only God knows a man's soul and is the sole judge, but Jesus told us that every man who believes in Him as Lord and Savior and has a relationship with Him will be saved. We do warn that ritual is often used as a replacement for a relationship with Jesus and that's very dangerous to your salvation. Relying on someone else to handle the spiritual stuff for you can easily preclude you from seeking a relationship with Him, which is a huge part of Catholic culture. Not as sure about Lutherans though.

Well father (i don't know wheter father is right, having had myself a catholic upbreeding😂) 1) you're very gifted for youtube 2) a point of view from a secular Catholic to a Lutheran: Of course you lutherans are catholics - WE as catholics are told the contrary, so the division in the ekklesia is just perceived (mostly because of its temporal consequences at the time). My point is even more radical: im most of its critics Luther WAS right. Unfortunately the Pope didn't agree, and it was a disaster since it sparked the birth of a thousand non denominated self proclaimed "christian churches" since Calvin and on. Now, i write from an estetical point of view, being myself more of a christian son of Spinoza than a son of belief - but, if the Pope attuned with a true faith he would have probably embraced Luther's thesis. He was an absolut genius, and a revolutionary, AND a priest. The only thing I can't agree with is Sola Scriptura, and i repeat it is the point of view of a NON ecclesiastic lover of Christ: if one believes in the gift given to the apostoles and in the church to be the direct incarnation of the spirit on earth, it is clear that Scriptura MUST be mediated, or there would be no need for a church, or even for the gift of Pentecoste.
@ourredeemerocala6337
@ourredeemerocala6337 3 месяца назад
Thank you for commenting! Thank you for your encouraging words! (I am usually addressed as Pastor, but Father is fine!) You bring up great points. We might be more similar on the topic of Sola Scriptura than you think. In our ordination vows Lutheran pastors confess, "I believe and confess the canonical Scriptures to the inspired Word of God and only infallible rule of faith and practice." That is what Lutherans mean by Sola Scriptura, which is not necessarily the same thing as others who use that term. Scripture alone is infallible, but Scripture is never meant to be "alone." We read, understand, and interpret Scripture within the context, history, and communal life of the "one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church" (Nicene Creed). (And as a confessional Lutheran, one of my ordination promises is to "perform the duties of [my] office in accordance with [the Lutheran Confessions], and that all [my] preaching and teaching and administration of the Sacraments will be in conformity with Holy Scripture and with these Confessions.") We have a high regard for all church traditions that contribute to good order, aid the proclamation of the Gospel, and do not contradict Scripture. Your statement of whether Scripture must be mediated through the Church is fascinating and is really making me think! Well, I'll say this. In many points of theology, Lutherans love paradoxes; we love answering "Both!" to all sorts of questions where others pick one side or the other. (E.g. Is the Bible God's Word or man's word? Is Jesus fully God or fully man? In Holy Communion do we receive bread and wine or Christ's body and blood? Does God predestine those who will be saved or do people choose to reject God?) We try hard to affirm what Scripture teaches--and no more!--to avoid the "extremes" of what necessarily happens when people try to make the faith make more sense to human reason. So regarding Scripture alone or mediation through the church, the best I can say is that Lutherans want to have it both ways! It need not be a simple yes or no. Perhaps the best way to approach this issue is how we teach the "means of grace." Does baptism save or does faith apart from baptism save? Does God forgive us directly when we pray or does he forgive us through the mediation of the church's sacraments--Baptism, Confession, Holy Communion? Both! Yes! (By the way, check out my midweek sermon series on Confession--on 2/21, 2/28, 3/6, 3/13, and 3/20. Well, I hope this helps. Thanks again for watching and commenting! --Pastor Joseph Signore

Well father, yours was articulate too. You see, I was talking about sola Scriptura but indeed i should have said nuda Scriptura, THAT is i feel kind of unreconciliabke with catholics, and of course more Calvinist than Lutheran. If you ask me, as a radical i'd even say that Calvinist promped a scism that created NON christian churches. Here is my point, even less secular than doctrinal. Lutherans ARE catholics, because they ARE born again beyond the baptism. The remaining obstacles are sola fide amd sola gratia, appereantly, but they're merely doctrinal obstacules. A true man god understands the soveraignity of faith on doctrine, but we have to define faith. I make a clear separation between catholics, ortodoxes and lutherans as christians as Calvinists and forth as non christians because of how the first and the latter interpretate Paul's definition, which is quite close to Jesus' one. We have three things as a remainder to christianity: faith, hope, and love. Now love, as stated, is the most important. Why so: because without it faith is nothing but credulity, and works are nothing but rituals, so inherently self serving children of pride fear and guilt, not of the Spirit . That is why love is at the very core of the christian message, and why works are only possible and true in love: because we are gifted with different talents to SERVE, not to believe. This is how i define a christian: as somebody who's born again in that truth that prompts love. I don't care anout salvation, i can't call christian a Calvinist, say, for that creed is a belief, in my opinion, not a faith. The after life does not concern me because when you're honest enough to open your darkest boxes to the spirit and ask for aid, you don't fear death. I'm not a christian in the common sense of the word, and my reason does not allow me to "believe" in the resurrection, or in miracles, but the point is: i don't need to believe to have faith . I FEEL Christ was God, whether he resurrected or not, for his example IS divine.. That's why i possibly understand Paul. They would have burnt me at the stake i guess😂. Have a nice evening father, thanks for answering!

The "Church" is defined in the Catechism. Every baptized person is in the Catholic Church. The Holy Order is a sacrament that required the laying of hand (laying of hand is just one of the many other requirements for a sacrament to be valid). As Catholic, we don't see others Christain denominations as an opposing force (some of their own individual interpretation might be as heresy as day and night), we believe the Catholic Church has the fullness of faith while other denominations don't. We have 7 valid sacraments, most has two. Faith is passed down and not discovered by chance or by one's effort alone. Faith has been there since the time of Adam and Eve by some small group of people and in favor with God and keep his law, not the way of Cain or of Calvin or any Relativist.

There are two different meanings for catholic depending on it it's used as an adjective or a noun. Catholic used with a small "C" is an adjective as used in the creed. and simply means "universal". Catholic with a capital "C" is used as a noun and refers to the hierarchy of the Catholic church. What I find funny is translating the creed why did they not translate the word "catholic" It should read, " I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy universal Church, the Communion of Saints;"

Reading of the New Testament will reveal that the Catholic Church does not have its origin in the teachings of Jesus or His apostles. In the New Testament, there is no mention of the papacy, worship/adoration of Mary (or the immaculate conception of Mary, the perpetual virginity of Mary, the assumption of Mary, or Mary as co-redemptrix and mediatrix), petitioning saints in heaven for their prayers, apostolic succession, the ordinances of the church functioning as sacraments, infant baptism, confession of sin to a priest, purgatory, indulgences, or the equal authority of church tradition and Scripture. @@sammygomes7381 Sammy, you are not being honest to me and to yourself. All you have is your personal understanding of Scripture, and to compare this to anything is devoid of any meaning. Do you understand this? Do you admit to the possibility that your understanding of Scripture is false, Sammy?

To be Catholic means to be part of the Catholic Church. That may be the Latin church or any other. Luther exactly separated from the Catholic Church, thus he and his followers are not Catholic, but rather sectarian. Sectarian simply means separated from the larger body of believers. There are many sects of the Catholic Church and the church of Luther is one of them.

I was raised Lutheran but left a long time ago. I'm sure Martin Luther is rolling over in his grave today with how close the Lutherans have moved back to be like the Catholics.

@@uchennanwogu2142 I became a Baptist and am very happy with it. I don't believe in liturgical churches. Paul states in the Bible that Christians should avoid vain and repetitious prayer and IMO that means liturgy as well.

That’s an interesting comment given that Luther prayed the Catholic rosary every single day of his life and was buried with it. He believed in the existence of purgatory until late in his life. Remember, he had been an Augustinian monk and it was Augustine of Hippo who introduced the concept of purgatory. His bible, the Luther Bible, included the apocrypha. He said it was a good thing to read. I am a Lutheran, and the bible we’ve always use exclude it. In the LCMS, each church is different. We are a confessional denomination, and unlike Catholics we don’t believe there anything you can do to gain salvation. It is a gift. Faith alone. Grace alone. Scripture alone. The Catholic Church is similar stool with three legs: tradition, the Magisterium, and scripture. We have no Magisterium and scripture is the bottom line. Some Lutheran congregations, like mine, afford women many leadership roles. Others do not. There are similarities and there are differences among Lutherans. I don’t think my congregation’s services seem very Catholic at all. But I know of others whose practices are much more similar to those of Catholics. You find the same thing among congregations in the Anglican communion.

But... Man, Luther was indeed very close to the catholic creed until his death. He was just a free thinker, and some of his remarks were actually right at the core.
