I've been doing some land development myself and have learned some things. After I purchased I had a lot of work coworkers asking about bare land and such. The number 1 thing I learned during the process is... Inspect where you intend on purchasing. Get a list of properties and make a trip. Utilize the county GIS sites to determine ownership and learn a little about the plots. When you go to these sites take the time to find a home that is established and try to talk with them about the area amd any concerns you may have. It won't take long to figure things out. I also avoid the land websites and try to stick with Zillow, a local broker, etc... If you chose a purchase agreement such as owner finance. Make sure it is set up like purchasing a home where a 3rd party holds the deed and manages the payments. Gotta keep things honest between 2 parties. I hope ya'll reconsider and find a plot to call your own. It's very rewarding to develop and build on your own land.
I own parcels off Hwy97 near chemult. Haven't had a lick of trouble yet but I do things by the book and to a T. Surveyed the land, planned the land etc... I've met all my neighbors and kept good contact through the summer. A part of the battle is just easing concerns of people around you. Respect the land and manage it will garner respect.
I'm sorry this happened to you guys. I live in keno which is on the other side of climate falls. But there are some areas out there that are like that. I guess if law enforcement doesn't do anything about it. There's nothing that can be done. But I would definitely stay away from bonanza or spray river maybe even chilliquin
Well now, this is an interesting development. I’m a retired Army Infantry SFC and also spent time as a Recruiter/Guidance Counselor. Now you’ll have the minimum to live in Bonanza, OR where I grew up. The Army is what you make of it, if you think you’re a constant victim, you’ll be thinking about things that’re a waste of time instead of just focusing on what’s important. And if you’re fat, then you’re fat, it’s not personal and welcome to adulthood. MEPS medical section looks to disqualify people, that’s it, period. I’ve seen kids just make stuff up because they got nervous when the doctors/staff asked them questions. My daughter served in the Army as a Practical Nurse and after finishing the Army she does the same job as she did in the Army but making $30 an hour and she’s enrolled full time in college and her GI Bill pays for everything as well as a $1,500 monthly check but she bought her own house a few years ago and she gets a $1,600 check each month from the VA for a minor injury as well as her full time job working 3 days a week. So, if you can do your job as directed and believe me, it’s not hard, you’ll enjoy your time with us. I loved having 3 and 4 day weekends off while I was single, I used to load up one of my motorcycles and head out to visit a girlfriend, I got married in 1990 after I was in the Army for 6 years and I’ve lived in Germany for a total of 6 years which I LOVED. I hope all goes well kid. Take a lesson from everything you do in life, if things go wrong, push forward to the best of your ability and that effort will be spotted by your NCO/Squad Leader and they will do everything humanly possible to fix the problem, I know because I’ve made mistakes and I’ve helped men that made mistakes, it boils down to your determination.
Unreal. I grew up in Klamath Falls and roamed around Bonanaza A LOT as well as spending two years as the Army Recruiter for Bonanza in 1993-95. Liberalism doesn’t work in rural communities where people rely on each other far more than in Fresno (I also lived in Hanford for two years and know Fresno well). First off, no gun? Seriously? People out there barter when funds are low, that’s why we build good relationships because they may need my assistance and I will be there when they need me. But for you, they see two kids whose minds are in lala land and have to learn skills they should’ve learned from their parents and community mentors……as we did. Can you hunt? Can you skin a deer? Can you grow vegetables? Can you replace the engine on your car if you had to do it by yourself? Do you even own a good amount of tools to repair cars? What kind of boots do you own? Do you own Goretex coats? Can you operate a chainsaw? Know how to sharpen a chainsaw blade? You need to learn how to show common respect to some people from the community by shaking their hand firmly, if you give a man a soft handshake he instantly knows you didn’t have a father figure in your life and was never taught basic skills that a man needs. We always have back up heat sources, usually a wood or pellet stove as well as electric or gas heat. But, if you can’t own a firearm due to a criminal background then I can’t help you. There’s a deputy sheriff (or two) who’s in bonanza and could be there in a few minutes but they knew exactly what kind of kids you are/were and you need to learn some life lessons. You would’ve learned a lot more if you went through a winter there but we see city liberals do the same as you all the time and they never make it through a winter and they head over the pass to Medford or back to California and move in with their mommy. Both of you have/had good intentions, I won’t deny that one bit. You’re both young and what I’ll say here may seem blunt and harsh to some but I don’t mean any disrespect, just honesty so it’ll help you in life. Rural living is a mixed bag at times. Most that live up in Klamath County we’re born and raised but some move there to get away from large city life and retire or raise their family in a better place. I grew up in Klamath Falls off of Altamont Drive in the 70’s-80’s and we have both sides of the coin. Our home was on a one acre lot that’s zoned for residence, light industry and farm animals. But a mile away there were regular neighborhoods as you grew up in. I can tell the young lady has never been out of the city in her life, she’s never rode a horse or fired a rifle and people out in Bonanza aren’t too happy to have to come rescue you and your kids when the first big storm hits and the roads are dangerous for 2 wheel drive cars without snow tires. Ask yourself, what do you offer to the community? How can you help your neighbors? If you say you can do coding or fix their computers, they’d laugh. Can you hunt? How will you two earn an income? Those people are asking themselves those questions in their minds because they will not allow you and your children to suffer or go hungry if things worsen for you and that’s a drain on them but they will help. If your husband is a well experienced auto mechanic or a welder then you have a LOT to offer them and you’ll meet less resistance. The people in Bonanza know about everyone living on that mountain (between Bonanza and Bly) and someone could have gone over and dealt with the idiot giving you crap but that didn’t happen, did it? Soft people belong in cities, it takes effort and experience to do well in a rural setting since emergency services is limited out there so we have to be more prepared and self reliant.
Was your land on Bly Mountain? Even us locals dont go up there. The Sheriff's hardly bother out there either. There are few patrols due to the mass amount of area. We dont have many units to patrol.
Klamath county only keys you camp for about 6 weeks a year unless you take to wheels off. Mobil homes take the wheels off. Also make sure you own the Timber and mineral rights. Composting toilet or septic tank?? Lots of volcanic rocks in the dirt there, well drillers will break lots of drill bits=$20,000+. Basically you guys did no research before buying. Your not made for rural living if you don’t do your do diligence.
I know it sucks, but in that area, your headbands are the equivalent of a summer nights spotlight on a blood filled jelly donut, with the local "slack jawed yokels" being starving mosquitos jonesing for a fix!!! I'm part Klamath/Modoc and live in Portland, and when I go down there to see family, I wear "camouflage" to avoid the un-avoidable hassles. (for appropriate camouflage fashion tips, watch Smokey and the Bandit, 1 or 2, and you too can blend in just like a copenhagen chawing chameleon!) You are talking about Bly Mountain, I retired from the Sheriff's Office. If you would have called the Office they would have told you about all of the problems up there. You made the best decision , do not walk away RUN.
Most people around those parts are armed as am I don't let anybody push you around Klamath Falls itself has a lot of tweakers and street people but out in the country it's not too bad it may be a little lawless you just have to be prepared push back

Glad you left. The last thing Oregon needs is more Calipornians. Klamath may be considered 'backwoods', or behind the times, but we like our way of life and people like you won't change it. And NO... I'm not saying breaking the law is acceptable here (it's not by any means) if that's truly what happened in your case. Either leave your Calipornian way of life and welcome to town, or keep on heading North to Portland where most of you end up. Klamath and the rest of Eastern Oregon want absolutely NOTHING to do with the rest of Oregon and certainly nothing from Calipornia. Call us what you will - we love our way of life here. @@Vampybattie that’s great news! I’m happy for you. All I can advise you for basic is to not give up. It’s on hard in the beginning but it gets easier. I promise and your body will go thru a physical shock because you’ll be constantly moving ..make sure you protect your feet from blisters because you WILL get them. And stretch every moment you get.

That your comfortable running in. Tbh I would buy a pair of boots to bring to basic because the boots they give you fuck your feet up.
