Thanks a lot for this in-depth reportage. I recently got fascinated of his story. You didn't mention the incident when he in young age innocently danced with a white girl on a tv show ( or something in that direction, I don't eant to say the story wrong). It caused a scandal an d that show was banned from TV. It got the showmaster Allan Freed into trouble.
@@yasinfrei Thanks for watching! The incident you're referring to happened in 1957 on Alan Freed's Big Beat show. I didn't mention it because I wanted to focus mainly on his life and career in the 60s.
Frankie is one of my favorites. It's very sad he was around the same age as me doing mostly grown up stuff he should've never been doing. His story is very sad. Another great video sir🫡
Hi Everyone! Please look at the interview between Dennis Edwards and Tom Meros. David RUFFIN did not have Eddie and Dennis money. Let's set the record straight. Dennis and Eddie left after their tour with $5,000 in cash each and each had a $50,000 bank note. David wanted all his pay in cash so he stayed at his brother Jimmy's house until Monday. He went back to Philly and visited a crack house and never came out according to Dennis. The promoters wanted to book another tour and double their money. Dennis nor Eddie could get David to come and sign the contract. You know the ending. Just look at the interview.
@@nhump7046 David's agent said the missing money belonged to him(David), Eddie and Dennis. David collected the money from the tour promoter and was supposed to wire Eddie and Dennis their shares over the weekend. Read about it here www.deseret.com/1991/6/10/18925050/temptations-singer-died-of-an-accidental-overdose-official-rules/
@@Relivelive This is another version that I have read about. However Dennis Edwards had an interview with Tom Meros and was adamant about the circumstances following their tour. David and Eddie were both deceased so I can't see any reason for Dennis to lie. He stated "David wanted all HIS pay in cash so he stayed with brother Jimmy until Monday. Eddie and I took $5,000 in cash and each of us also had a $50,000 bank note cashable in 10 days. David went into a crack house with $55,000 and never came out." According to Dennis a promoter had booked another tour doubling their pay. He and Eddie had signed but they needed David to sign also. Dennis stated he talked to David several times but couldn't get him to leave that "PLACE." I'm so heartbroken every time I think about the sad ending. Thanks for your comment.
Dennis said "I didn't really want to leave the group, but I wanted to do a solo album and they had a policy: If you do a solo album, you're out of the group."
Seems like after 1973, The Temptations were in creative rut; simply trying to relevant through uptempo tunes & slow jams with results varied from adequate to mediocre to horrendous (except for Power). The idea for the Reunion was promising and it’s clear all the guys wanted it to happen as much as the fans did. However the execution failed quickly as it started from the album to the tour.
@@brendathompson2378 Nope never... It was said so the listener would know which group was being talked about. There are three different Temptations groups mentioned in this video.
Great video! I enjoyed watching this and I'm a big fan of The Temptations. They're my all time favorite group in the world and I grew up listening to their music. Keep up the good work and hope you do some more stories on The Temptations. Because I would love to hear some more stories about the group. Once again a great video!
CORRECTION It was actually late 1981* when Jimmy Bishop contacted Otis about doing the Reunion tour. Later that year (after the Lake Tahoe show) it was announced to the public that David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks would be rejoining the group. No they were the LEAD voices of the Temptations. And only lead on the hits. You can't have a Temptation album without Melvins Voice and how you gonna leave Paul out? Nah...The real voices of the Temptations were the 2nd version of the Original Temptations. Eddie, David, PAUL, Melvin and Otis. THAT was the voices of the Temptations.
@@jaylene.turner6524 With all due respect. Read my post again. I stated that "the real voices of The Temptations were the 2nd version of the Original Temptations. The reason why I stated that was because most of the general public regards Eddie, David, Paul, Otis and Melvin as the Original Fabulous Five. However (mainly because of the movie) we know that Elbridge Bryant was thee Original member of the group. I was only putting it in context to explain to others. David was NOT a original member and you are correct. But as you know some folks are slow and they just don't get it. lol lol
This was a good overview of the history of The Temptations reunion. I remember their hit "Standing on the Top", and I didn't quite understand why The Temptations couldn't keep it together. I now have a better understanding of what really happened, and I've also learned how egos can really get in the way of groups staying together.
@@HB76558 I'm not surprised. I also believe that Larry Blackmon wanted to go in a different direction in the early 80's, because the big horn sound of the 70's was being replaced by the synthesizer. And bands in the early 80's was starting to downsize. And this shift is what caused EW&F to go on hiatus from 1983 to 1987.
It's hard to deal with personal stuff at times fillings come into view sometimes that's always hard to deal with when things don't come as easily with different people personally!!

This Otis bashing is making me sick. He wasn’t responsible for those GROWN men who also had children. I would do the same thing if I was Otis. No one’s going to mess with my money because you won’t act right. And you also can’t blame him for taking much better care of himself than his own band mates which is why he’s the only one left.🤷🏾♂️ You “miniseries” fans are ridiculous.🤣
Otis rather DR Williams makes me sick What kind of doctor could he be That is embarrassing to educated people who earned it but then he never really earned much of anything did he
A lot of managers would and did the same thing as Otis and it is shameful Those talented men and women worked hard and lived tortured lives to earn their money while the Berry's and Otis's sat back and kept the books and "managed" land decided how much to let the stars keep and what to keep for themselves for doing comparatively nothing but running their mouths and giving certain women preferential treatment in return for sex
Profiles in Pittsburgh Allegheny County PA my brother Joe Parker Friedman call Lee pass away I couldn't help him I only could watch the kids clothes for hours in our living room I now go and watch The Temptations representing my mother and my brother my brother's son. My nephew would sing to me my girl and hold his head in my lap he has passed away a year ago and now his grandsons want to see The Temptations I'm so in love with the group this year was a great spacers for me. Their voices were magnificent and that's what makes a performance want to remember thank you Otis William for the spiritual part Motown Industries I'm happy to see you're fine in Detroit Michigan. When you come now to Motown in a cab you can say drop me off at Otis Williams Street I can make my way from there. I will go to Detroit if God let me visit his will and have my cousins up there take me to Dr Otis Williams Street. Wow Hallelujah my brother forever Nora Parker❤❤❤❤❤😊
David Ruffin is without equal in my opinion from all I can learn about him My greatest regret is that I can't know him for myself The other thing that stands out most in my research is the dark malevolent influence of Otis Williams throughout the Temptations story He was a master of manipulation with his humble smiling face and pretension of well wisher and good for all He was taking every opportunity to undermine certain group members and stay in the forefront I think he had an ego problem and a desire to be bigger than the group and the only way he could do that was at David's expense Otis was a parasite who sucked the life out of the Temps but keeps them going so he can keep on sucking 18:35 Sounds like David finally figured out how to play him by making him think he wasn't his enemy but Ruffin knew he was still an insecure little nobody who no one was ever going to come to see🤣
David had a equal his name was (MARVIN JR. Of the Dells) Marvin could sing everything that David could sing and David could sing what Marvin could sing
Otis gets on my nerves.Im sure if we heard David or Eddies story it would be much diferent The movie did not even tell David or Eddie in a good light Im sure none of them are angels .But Otis is not the only one we want to hear from.I know for a fact he was jealous of the guys the women n men loved.❤Otis was a hater !!! With no talent for real Now hes Dr.Come on you sound staight out the country Talking about Eddie is stuff He could sing and was so fine .Every man wanted to be him every women wanted to be with him ❤❤❤❤
How did you know that he was jealous of the other guys? Im curious. Tell us how you KNOW that Otis was hater. To the rest of us you just sound like a groupie or a fan. Were you with the other guys and you saw for yourself? Or let me guess your favorite was one of the other members and YOU saw the movie so you know right?
Entirely too much Otis bashing. He is blamed for the poor choices of grown men. Why did Dennis and Eddie leave Ruffin behind on an European tour to collect money. Ruffin ended up dead and the money was never recovered. Otis is not faultless, but neither are any of these guys. Thank you Otis for preserving the legacy of the Temptations!
😅 Otis had a big head after everybody passed away he said he started the temptations he did not start The temptations him Eddie and Paul together with Melvin started the temptations Otis was not a one-man show
THANK YOU! He doesn’t deserve this hate from people who weren’t even around, and listen to the miniseries. They all were GROWN, and made their own decisions that lead to their deaths except for Melvin as he was actually sick.
Who had a bigger head than Ruffin. He wanted to change the name of the group putting himself out front. The Temptations had a line up where all could lead ,Paul, Eddie and David were the best. Had Ruffin led things the Temptations would be a faded memory.
Good Evening I love this video You really passionate about The Temptations. Many fans agree that their reunion album could have been better coordinated and produced. Some journalist and fans even said that Motown should have brought Norman Whitfield back to produce some tracks on that album. Continue to Strive For Excellence.
Otis wanted to limit the success of the record He had already squelched the reunion as much as he could in an underhanded way he was despicable listen to the story
Otis didn't want the reunion to be too successful especially for Eddie and David because he didn't want them back in the group They were too popular and they had him figured out
You are correct but ya'll its not just that easy to just "get Whitfield" at that time. Norman Whitfield had his own record company called Whitfield Records.. His first act was the Undisputed Truth, whom he had convinced to leave Motown, followed by Rose Royce, Willie Hutch, Yvonne Fair, Nytro, Mammatapee and Junior Walker. The Undisputed Truth scored their second biggest hit in 1976 with the disco song "You + Me = Love", their first single on Whitfield Records. Norman Whitfield had an international smash hit in 1976 with Rose Royce's "Car Wash", issued on MCA Records..
@@user-hu5ge3in3t Facts. But by the time that The Temptations reunited, Norman's label had folded and Gwen Dickey Rose Royce's original lead singer had left the band due to conflicts with Norman who wanted her to give the band's trumpet player more leads and she also had issues with some of the band members who thought that she was getting more attention. Norman was avaliable at the time
