i was a rescue diver on the Circus Circus on the double blowovwr with the Miss Madison. The Circus Circus was broken pretty much in half and was being held together by the deck friberglass. Other than being stunded and a couple bruses by what happened the driver was ok.
Spectacular boats with a long history. If you remember Gar Wood in the 1930's, bandleader Guy Lombardo and his boat Tempo, Bill Muncey and Chip Hanauer...these are the legendary drivers of the past in the most beautiful form of motorsport...the Unlimited Hydroplanes!
Really miss Steve Woomer and his team.... RIP my friend. Too bad your boys at Competition Specialties didn't carry on in your honor. There is a part of me that is ticked that they didn't- it's about a legacy.
I was once told when these boats crash, that the drivers whole cockpit detaches like a pod to help save the driver. Was any of that true? Cause these videos dont seem to catch no pods flying away from the rest of the boats.
You can't expect to survive when you flip the boat and you have no canopy your neck is going to be broken and you're going to die instantly the old F1 cars the drivers were totally exposed look what happened to Ayrton Senna.
Agreed. He was the best driver and then they put him in the best boat. My favorite days was him driving Circus Circus. Him and Bud had the best battles.
Third from right took a very sharp veer to his left creating the bottleneck. More complex than that but that's my interpretation of the start of that chain of events. Those guys sure raced dirty and deadly. Glad he climbed out.
Great stuff! Unlimited Hydroplanes are the most beautiful form of motor sport. Big, powerful hulls racing on an ever-changing course, throwing a huge roostertail of water at 200 miles per hour. And a glorious history of famous boats, owners and drivers...people like Gar Wood, Bill Muncey and Chip Hanauer. Nothing like it!
