Yves Montand not Robert Goulet. ffs. You undereducated shmoes. A great dramatic actor NOT considered a singer. This was a bold career move although he was a highly respected French actor.

Can't get enough of this. Those swing bands were the epitome of orchestral pop music. It was "jazz fusion" 40 years before the term was coined.

This was and is classy music--my father loved Glenn Miller, and I grew up listening to him thanks to my beloved father. His wretched wife never appreciated or took any interest in his music. This song brings back such memories; my father would have loved this video if his wretched wife had allowed him to have a smartphone.

Let me mention those two supermen dancers. Nicholas brothers...numero uno but tied with them Eleanor Powell. Gene and Fred. There have been thru the years many superior dancers in many venues but these are top five. Never to be any better!!!

I have watched this since 1972 and I have NEVER heard such great sound and dynamics - thank you for mixing or enhancing the sound. Whatever you did, you are a genius! I heard every instrument and it made a HUGE difference in sound. Thank you William.

Obviously a pirated video taken from someone in the audience, and that’s why the lighting and camera work is so bad. It was probably recorded in the 1980s while it was still under the ownership of Skee Goodhart, the successor of Morris Chalfen, before the company was taken over by Endemol in 1996. The choreographer of this production was the late Ted Shuffle, who had worked with Holiday on Ice for decades. Most of the numbers in this video are pedestrian, but Ravel’s Bolero was Shuffle’s masterpiece. He had first choreographed this for his new show in 1969, after having watched Maurice Bejart’s version with Jorge Donn in the leading rôle. Shuffle’s version is nothing like Bejart’s (how could a solo skater last 15 minutes on the ice?) but it does follow the idea of one person being joined slowly by others until a final climax of the entire company. However, unlike in the 1980s, in 1969 Shuffle had a company of World Champions and Olympians to work with, and the piece was hailed as a triumph in every city where it was performed. It was brought back more than once, and on one occasion played by a live rock band. (Ravel liked jazz, and didn’t care much for Bolero, but the rock version I heard would have had him turning in his grave). So it’s a great pity that the Bolero in this video couldn’t be seen live, with proper lighting, and with the 1969 version. As for the rest of the production - same old stuff, same old formula, same old feathers, same old finale (THE TWO GIRLS -AGAIN!!!)

Correction: Ted Shuffle’s original Bolero was conceived in 1971, and not 1969 as I had erroneously stated above. From the original 1971 cast, only Gudrun Haus & Walter Häfner skated in the 1982 version.

I understand the movie was originally shot as a roadshow production - longer, and with an intermission. I wonder if any of the missing footage exists. There was a duet with Larry Blyden: "Wait Til We're Sixty-five," and even Jack Nicholson had a song: "Who Is There Among Us Who Knows?"

Love that classy Nelson Riddle accompaniment. I wonder if this is the song where in one sequence she wears a futuristic outfit in black, yellow and white, but it was cut from the film.

Am I right in thinking that 24:00 onwards is partly the recycled "Bolero" choerography? They have even set the music to 6/8...And they used a similar choero in Ice and Cymbals from the 1986 show...
@wmg93
@wmg93 10 месяцев назад
I think it's safe to say that both Bolero and La Bamba are borrowing heavily from Maurice Béjart's ballet choreography for Boléro. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m5CFJlzlGKM.html (By the way, the time signature of the Ravel work is 3/4, divided into triplet figures.)
