I too didn't realise that Bobby Van died too so young. He was a great singer and he had great camera presence. Its such a sad loss to the movie industry too.
Thank you for having this on You-Tube. Good to see it again after so many years. I first saw it in the thearters. I do not like the musical score that much, it takes away much of the drama of the story.
Gianni Truvianni: Our world, this terrible world, is a place where nothing really amazing happens and where all we do is watch TV to fill our minds with images -not information- that only bring us some brief moments of... what?... but without the happiness and peace of that wonderful lost world that is Shangri-La. When James Hilton invented that utopian place -just the Huxley's 'Brave New World' reverse- was satisfying a deep human need.
I Loved this movie...and I have been looking for it for years...couldn't even remember the name, but always remembered the tune..today, I found you :D Thank you!
Bobby Van did this- he was healthy and beautiful and full of energy- cant believe he passed on quite early in life- he had it all - good looks and talent!
does anybody know where I can get my hands on the sheet music for this great piano number? They never reprinted the original songbook and I;d like to perform itl.
The songs in this movie don't seem to fit in, but I do like the movie and thanks for uploading! The woman playing Maria also played Juliet in the 1960's version of Romeo & Juliet and she was awesome in that role. Seems funny to see her in a more modern role.
Maybe closer then you think, remember the book came out in 1933 on the heels of the book burnings in Berlin of May of that same year. Consider that the Good Fathers idea of collecting the art and thought of mankind in one place is not such a strange thing to present to the public at that time.
My mother introduced me to this film, and South Pacific and West Side Story, and the King and I etc, all wonderful films but this is still the one I remember watching with her
People only need so much to live comfortably. But so many are obscene they way they consume-it is not responsible to others in the world to be this way.
One interesting fact is that the novel was published at around the same time as Hitler's ascent to power in Germany, which may be one reason why the novel speaks of a coming cataclysmic war which would threaten to wipe out civilization. Given that World War II ended with the explosion of the atomic bomb, the most destructive force the world had ever seen prior to that time, the vision which Hilton gives to the High Lama is somewhat prescient.
Of course, we're not supposed to ask why Harry Lovett (Bobby Van's character) was allowed to meet Catherine (Liv Ullman's character) before Conway was!
It is just so beautiful! I've been looking for this movie for years! and I was thrilled to have found it for purchased as well the CD soundtrack. So please I am! Thanks!
Nobody lives that long. And where is the place with no bacteria that causes disease? What we have is called "greed." Look around you. Why is there war? Someone wants what someone else has. All food put together, would suffice the world. Land? There is plenty of land. More than enough for the world population. Why do we live homeless? Greed. Again the magic word. Greed.
Thank you so much for the upload of this film. when I was a little girl my mother would play the album on our stereo in the living room while we would clean house and we would sing the songs together. This movie has brought back so many child hood memories and I love it thanks again...now if I can only get my teenage daughters to watch this and appreciate it for what it is worth
RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY ARE THINGS OF BOOKS , DIALOGUES AND DEBATES . MUCH DEEPER IS LIFE, LOVE , LIVING, BEING , AND DYING OF PEOPLE AND ALL LIVING THINGS. IT IS MUCH OF HEARTBEATS AND HEART SONGS. ENVIRONMENTS AND RELATIONSHIPS AND DEATH ALWAYS MAKE THINGS DIFFERENT .
One of those Rare movies out of the early 70's that had a real family theme to it. This modern classic needs to be viewed by everyone who once had a dream of Peace.
In the fall/winter of 1982, I was a terribly sick 11-year-old who happened to catch this film on daytime TV (ABC I seem to recall) while I was recovering at home. I had only heard the song once after that in a furniture store in 1983 or '84. It's exactly this portion of the film I remember so vividly, and after all this time, I finally found it again. It had that much of an impression on me that I never forgot the song or the scenes. Thank you for posting it.
