This is so insane, imagine the forces involved in this work. My dad was a sailor, he and two others had to secure an 8 ton reserve prop, which had come loose. One of the three got washed over board. When my dad and the remaining guy had finished the job, they found the third guy under the stairs leading up to the bridge. A wave had washed him onto the tanker again. He'd lost a thumb in trying to hold on to the safety line. They used tread and an iron to somewhat close the wound. Dad told me they took a real beating that day. The galley got flooded and a shit ton of portholes got blown open.

This video does not give a true representation of just how big these engines are. Much of these engines are below deck level. I’m curious if the oil and fuel filters can be accessed without removing deck plates?
Great improvements. I design hulls for fast, fuel efficient, comfortable rough sea operation, and as an engineer. I liked your presentation very much since all your improvements build on the old where possible. Here is why I write. I have another further improved design, for rough sea even greater safety and comfort, and at this time I need engine dimensions, allowing the engine to be lowered further into the run of the hull. I checked the CAT site, but found no dimensions included anywhere. You do wise designs, I notice, so below the drive shaft, where the hull run is, any needless engine feature which if rediced in width would allow mounting deeper. Any change in the mounting rails which can be narrowed closer than your present 28.9" shown with needed vibration absorbing pads, would be a further help. You may know that hulls in rough seas are harder to turn over when the center of gravity is lowered. My hull is really good in bad weather, but I want to try to improve it even more, since it may be used for Search and Rescue. My present 39' design i am working on will allow +40 MPH with your 500 HP C7.1. My 36' fishboat with 270 HP gas Olds 403 marine, pushed the hull to 35 MPH, so my 39' should get +40 with your 7.1. These are real workboats, not runabout hulls. I am located in Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada. One other reason for mounting lower into the run, is to reduce the height of the engine box and working floor. Your competitor QSB-6 has the drive shaft below the mounts? Your is well abov the shaft. One final thing, my hulls do not have that forward lifte bow but has an attitude of 2-3 degrees at speed, so I tend to have the prop shaft at the same angle as your drive shaft. Your 12 series seem to be aimed in my direction more ? For your info, my 6' hull model of my 36' full hull, was tested smoothly and perfectly stable without exponential power increasing, but almost linear up to +70 MPH. I saw no need to go beyond that speed , but would allow more. I'm getting older, so my present hull design may not be built? Just confirming the urgency. Be safe and keep up the fine work.
Hi Shenaz Beckr! Some details have been lost to time, such as the exact month this was filmed. However, we can tell you this was filmed during the summer. The summer weather in this part of Greenland probably looks a little different than your summer weather! - Yas
Excellent video quality, I can only wish that the video covered some aspect in more detail. I understand it's only an overview but with the amount of work done you glossed over aspects I'd would have loved to see.
With the lack of after care support we got, or not got, from Cat UK we will never ever fit Cats again no matter how good. Impossible to get a technician to do a site visit for a problem engine. Ended up doing a repower to Volvo who actually care once they have your money.
Thank you for your interest, the truth! Your Cat dealer can help you with pricing and availability on Diesel Engine. You can find a location near you on our website www.cat.com/en_US/support/dealer-locator.html?. - Andy
Thanks for the question @tonydetwiler2624. Air is required for successful combustion. To burn fuel, a minimum air-fuel ratio is needed. If air intake is shut off all together, combustion is not possible. We’ve worked to find the best air-fuel ratio to minimize fuel consumption, optimize combustion, and reduce soot. - Maria
