Is he "Backup" or "spoiler"? For those who like PAP they will not vote for "Dark horse". They have two choices- "Preferred" or "Backup"? This splits their votes allowing the Dark horse to win. "Preferred" can go back to PAP to minimize loss at next GE and "Backup" can continue playing golf, etc.

I can assure you that majority definitely DON'T want TKL to be President. If NKS is not in the race, I will vote for Tharman. Voting for a candidate just because he's not PAP is even more retarded than voting for a candidate just because he's from PAP. Majority of Singaporeans look at the person more than the party. That's why Jamus Lim was able to be elected into parliament, and other opposition candidates including those that endorsed TKL can not.
