When I used to practice photography, Cardinals were so difficult for me to capture. Even at a distance, they would fly away after just a moment. I live in st. Louise Missouri btw, so they seemed to be around at least part of the year.
I just came here because I didn't know that females courted males. I witnessed a female tenaciously pursuing a male. They were both on a power line. The female would jump to one side of the power line and vibrate her wings, and then switch sides and do it again. The male would then fly off. The female would chase him and try again. I was like "am I witnessing the first time a female courts a male in nature?" Apparently it's rare but both males and females will dance for each other if they like what they see, and not all males respond to a female's advances.
If the lady doesn't admire you, she won't fall for you. You have to impress her. You can't get distracted by food or she'll go with a more impressive guy.

I've got a pair of cardinal nesting and brown thrashers nesting in the little patch of woods in my back yard. I've been giving peanuts to them he's been coming by to let me know he's looking for more. I also had a Bluejay land on my railing squaking at me.
