I'm not Mr. Physics by any stretch but there should be credit given that whoever designed this ride did in fact do some testing on the seat locking mechanism to ensure that one's own body weight would not break the lock after an extended time of putting pressure on that lock itself. The ride itself prob only puts high load on it for a brief moment of time and then releases the load again, but this was a long sustained duration to say the least (being fully upside down). At the end of the day, thank goodness people did not drop down from locks breaking...that would be a tragedy Wonderland would NEVER recover from!!!
The restraints and locking mechanisms could easily withstand higher forces than your body could. Your bones would break and you'd squeeze through the middle of the restraint long before the hydraulic cylinders would burst.
This is a very dangerous situation. Being upside down for this length of time can cause heart failure and death. Two people complained of chest pain before being released. I'm thinking they were VERY lucky their hearts didn't stop.
Seriously. Human bodies aren’t made to stay upside down for long. The organs push on lungs making it hard to breathe, heart is stressed, blood pools in the head making stroke more likely the longer it goes on. It seems stopping upside down is one event ride designers have not considered very much…
Depends on a person's health, but this length of time is quite far into the "danger zone". This could easily have resulted in serious injury, even death.
