“Have you ever been so desperate to sew something that you broke down and bought a $20 mini sewing machine?” YES. Literally me today. It happened to be on clearance for about $14 and I felt like I wouldn’t be at TOO much of a loss. 😅😂
Nice job. You could have bought an extender for your pedal cable instead of working on the floor. It is a common mono audio extender what you need. Maybe a stereo one does the job too.
I just got an itch to sew a dress (quite a simple idea, just a bunch of frilled tiers to emulate ancient sumerian dress) after not sewing for almost two years and I'm not wanting to break the bank on any sort of "proper" machine... I saw this cute thing on Amazon and went to research it! Lo and behold you've done a stunning thing with it so now I want to try!
❤you did pretty good! who much in total? i can see WHY they suggested that boning you left out, still looks Great! lol the way you say "baw TINS" is so cute, like a baby, adorbs ❤
One quick tip when sewing velvets try using a walking foot. They don't need a zig zag. Rufflers don't need a zig zag either. I really applaud the vintage treadle machine. Good for You!!!!!
That was pretty impressive! I've been sewing for (eep!) over half a century (I started as a kid), and as the granddaughter of two women who worked in sewing factories, I can tell you that there are many times where you "diverge" from the pattern instructions (read: when they don't make sense, do what does). You can use your machine to help you gather rather than doing it by hand. Since you had so much fabric, the way to do it would be to sew for a bit, leaving long ends, then sew a slightly overlapping seam, again leaving long ends. Keep doing these (no more than 2-3 feet long) on the top of your skirt.and you'll get through the gathering MUCH faster. Sewing with that old a sewing machine makes things difficult. I initially learned to sew on a machine like that, and it was frustrating that I could only do straight stitching. You may want to plunk down a few bucks for a cheap machine that'll do zigzag and machine blind hemstitches to make your life easier (even though, if you're me, you often wind up having to rip out a few stitches here and there so nothing shows). I was able to get one from JoAnn for around $100.
My daughter's prom gowns ('93 & '94) were almost 300" in circumference at the hem (I made both). Many high schools still have cotillion-style proms, with hooped gowns. Your evening gown is lovely...and I admire your tenacity with a Vogue pattern. They've never been user-friendly for me. Blessings!!!!
Why are all sewing machines backwards? I know not all people are right handed, but for me a righty, I have to have the heads of my pins inserted on the right. Sew a few stitches, stop pull the pin out from the center of the machine, repeat. I will gladly buy the first machine with the needle on the right side.
😭 I was so heartbroken when you said you need someone to help you fasten it up and you don’t have anyone. I’m sure you meant at that moment but the way it came out was so sad ❤. The dress is gorgeous!! Great job, you deserve a nap!! I love all of your furry supervisors helping out too 😝
I have a similar machine from Wally World. I have to admit, it's amazingly efficient. Quite portable, as well, since machine and accessories all fit nicely into an insulated lunch bag.
