Just an FYI. I live in Texas and my house sits at 4000 feet. I have 100 plus miles of single-track right out my front door which offers lots of elevation gain and it’s year round rideable. Franklin Mountains State Park.
Listening to this, reinforces why I (and many others) will never come to the USA and participate in any event, or ride my bike for recreation purposes. I recently rode a 2000km ultra through the UK (England, Wales and Scotland) and experienced nothing but courtesy from motorised vehicle drivers and this was a pleasant surprise as the UK is not supposed to be bike friendly!
I don't blame you. We have a car problem here, it's not okay, but it sure is disappointing as USA is rich in natural beauty. Personally, I'm eager to experience a ride in the UK were I don't have to worry about angry motorist.
@@bikesordeath it is a real shame as, from what I have seen I would love to experience your wilderness and countryside. I live in Southern Spain, a country that has a strong cycling culture and great respect for cyclists. The law is also very strongly on the cyclists' side (bicycles are considered cars in law and therefore they have exactly the same rights in law. You are basically a slow moving car). I was very surprised when I recently rode through the UK, the event was 75% off road (and chunky) but that means that 25% or 300 miles of it was on the road, and I experienced nothing but helpfulness and courtesy! I really enjoy your podcast and you touch on some very interesting subjects, you are also very open and that's becoming a rarity. The event(s) that you organise sound like a blast too! If you ever feel like coming over to Spain, either solo or with your family let me know and we'll do what we can for you! Good luck and all the best, Tim
Thank you for the interview. Really enjoyed watching Chris’s video series on RU-vid and I donated a bit to help his charity on behalf of a great bike shop that helps us riders .. Derailed Bikes, Butte. If others can help please do. My sister also has genetic blindness and I have a 50% chance. What Chris did is so damn impressive!!!
Awesome pod cast, rarely do I watch any but couldn't resist this after meeting Chris on the TD. Truly a great man inspirational to all, watched all his youtube kids. Honor to have met! Ute Pass Steve. Got his back to help Leadville 100, let me know friend.
My understanding is the GDMBR, designed by The American Cycling Association, is a MTB route from Banff Canada to Antelope Wells NM. It can be ridden by anyone. The Tour Divide is a race that follows the exact route of the GDMBR. No deviation from the route is allowed. You can ride the GDMBR and make any route changes you desire. Some do to avoid the nasty mud sections. If you’re not racing you can call it whatever you like. A popular RU-vid cyclist, Ryan Van Duzer, is competing in the 2024 Tour Divide. He stated he is starting in Banff. I’m not sure what the guy being interviewed is talking about with the TD starting in Jasper MT.
He didn't say that the TD starts in Jasper. The official GDMBR by the ACA starts in Jasper, Canada. You can verify this on their website. There is a lot of confusion out there between the GDMBR and the Tour Divide which is a race that mostly follows the GDMBR. Often people will conflate the two and when Jay was attempting his ITT, he was riding the official GDMBR. Part of his ride was an attempt to bring more attention to the original route. Tour Divide starts in Banff, Canada. GDMBR starts in Jasper, Canada.
@@bikesordeath I just looked at the ACA map and, you are correct, it does start in Jasper, Canada. I was not aware of that. Every video I’ve seen about this route people keep saying Banff but nobody mentions Jasper. Not sure why the tour divide doesn’t start in Jasper. Too confusing.
a big hello to Jay P. a true legend. I would like to know what he thinks of the European EDT route and if he has ever thought of doing it. I hope to do it on July 24th during my holidays. I know it's not a competition but could it become one in the future for your association?
Nice interview.. First time I watched anything with Angus is when he and Lachlan biked and filmed their Aussie ride. Nice to hear more from him. I'd love to see more bike packing films with him, Lachy, Lael. Who cares about the "rule" of filming. How do they the organizers or trails expect to showcase the depth of the course, the weather, struggle, triumph and the possibilities of others to push themselves outside of their box.
Hannah! I really enjoyed listening to your post-AZT/triple crown interview. The favorite comment I heard from a hiker I met when I was following you in the Canyon was, "She looked STRONG and was moving like a horse to water!" Yes, I'm certain they were thinking I looked quite weak in comparison. 😂 I really enjoyed the moments I was able to share with you out there - thanks for pushing me! Here's hoping we cross treads again in the future 🍻 PS You just finished the f'ing triple crown. Tell those cheapos to get you something better than Miller Lite!
Why do you think we don't see more of the guys overseas compete in AZT and COTR? I was just thinking the question when he mentioned he is going to race it!!! Thats super exciting!!!!
I think it just comes down to money. If they’re are going to make it all the way over here, it makes the most sense to do the longest ride. I do know of a big name international racer that’s taking on the triple crown next year, but I’m not able to share who, yet!
I rode this on a 26" mtb pulling a bob trailer back in 2000 from Montana/Canada Border through Wyoming to start of Colorado. It was rough and rugged then. And a bit over a year ago did the Colordo trail and all that reminded me was doing CDT on my old hard tail back in 2000. Thanks for the interview.
43:38 the go fund me should pay for lawyers to go after the insurance money. Its as though the insurance companies are in cahoots; protect each other from payouts. Fuckers!
@1:15:05 Garmin Varia doesn't have the best mounting option if running a saddle or seat bag (seat post height dependent). None the less, an excellent peace of mind tool. Get well soon Jay P
Jay Petervary is always fun to listen to given all of his experience riding bikes & doing ultras. But damn, seeing him in a freaking body cast is tough to see. It’s not so much the neck contraption that’s hard to take … it’s that the guy is wearing a body cast during this interview. Damn! Thankfully, he’s outta that tortuous body cast now and is recovering from getting ran over - literally, dude got ran over from behind by an inattentive / distracted driver. JayP, the only way I’m gonna get the image of you in that damn body cast fully outta my brain is when I see new video of you back on the awesome GDMBR route!
Patrick, your podcast helps get me through many long training rides - thanks for your hard work and passion for the sport! ... ps, your April AZT ITT depart is intriguing... :)
As a PT for 28 years, I applaud you for this excellent episode that was incredibly relevant! Great job, guys. I hope that a lot of people listen to this episode. We should all be lifelong students of health and fitness! For those who are born with hip problems such as “knock knees” that prevent them from sitting cross legged, it is often best not to try and “fix” that with stretching into external rotation because you can cause more problems than you help. Hip ante-version is bone structure issue from birth, not a muscle tightness issue in the hips. This is an example where seeing a PT at least once in the clinic can be very valuable as the PT can prevent you from doing exercises that work for most people but can be counterproductive for some.
