Southern Stories, is a channel hosted by "Chuck Philipp", where I cover untold stories of the Deep South. Most of the stories I have published, are largely based on my personal experience as a "Boomer" growing up in the 60s & 70s. I hope these videos bring back memories to the ones who lived through this era and show this generation, there was a time when America was not perfect, but was certainly better than where we are today. Please feel free to leave your comments and subscribe to this channel, also click the notification bell to be notified when the next story is released. If you are interested in Home Preservation that is focused on mitigating the issues that face our Southern Homes, subscribe to "Building Science" Here is the link: www.youtube.com/@southalabamahomeinspection2434
Hi Chuck ty for your videos. Hope you don’t mind if I ask you some questions I would like to explain my situation first. I have some black mold in my attic, during the cooler season it grows and during the hot months it is. I wanted to cool my attic down so I put on white silicone liquid roofing and it did cool my attic down 30 degrees, however, when I put the silicone on the shingle, there were no longer breathable so my attic is double choked now from the top and also, they overfilled to much insulation and most likley choked off my soffit vents. I no longer can assess the attic space, it only 2-4 feet almost completely filled with insulation. I have added a couple gable vent and seem to have helped allot. I would like to confirm with you if you believe that the attic temperature should be as close to the outside temperature as possible. Its my believe that if you keep the attic temperature and the outside temperature as close as possible that not get condensation from extreme differences in heat and cold. I have two questions. 1) Do you believe in gable fans? I have 4 box vent and two gable vents. I want to put a fan at one end of the gable. 2) My next question is with the new gable vent, should blow air into the attic or reverse the vent and blow air out of the attic? 3) Do you believe I should keep the temperature of attic as close to the outside air has possible all year around. I do not know if I should let the attic heat go a little higher to kill of some mold.
You have very valid points. The biggest issue is the moisture itself. Attic Ventilation is a science and many attics vary in functionality. I would try adding a gable end fan on the opposite side from where the wind direction is mostly coming from. The fan should be positioned where it exhaust air from the attic space, instead of blowing into it. This may help in removing the moisture which leads to mold. NOTE: Gable End vents work best when there is no other vents present such as Ridge Vents, Soffit Vents etc . There should only be the 2 Gable End Vents. Hopefully this may mitigate this issue. FYI: The best performing attic systems I have evaluated as a Home Inspector are ones that are " properly" encapsulated.
Also I know everyone says you have to dry as the dam wood will diluite the checmidal. Do you eally have to pefectly dry the area first or can I just over fog the area?
I have never had to do that. However, wood that has severe mold, I use a lot of product. It is best to use a dehumidifier in the area after it has been treated
Thanks for video. Hope you do not mind if I ask you two quesitons. 1) I wannted to great the mold in my attic. I know I need to close all the vents, my cocner is that if I close the vent the air will be still. Do i need a fan to ditribute the fog all around my area or will fog naturally work it way though out large areas without air movement? 2) Also did you ahve any issue with corrosion or issue wiht your basement items as a result of using Concrobium?
I have never had any issues using Concrobium. It is best to seal off the area as best you can before fogging. If that is not possible then I suggest applying a lot of product. If you are having mold issues in the attic, you may have insufficient ventilation
@@davidhazen2394 I used what is called an Electric "Cold Fogger" which can be purchased on Amazon. However, a high pressure paint sprayer may work just as good
Question. Should I add air ANYTIME the psi gets below the house water pressure with a handheld pump? Example, if the house water pressure is set a 60psi, I have the expansion tank set at 65. If that pressure on the expansion tank falls below 60psi, should I put air into it? To my understanding, just like a tire...the expansion tank will lose air over time.
I don't know too much about concrete block work, but I do know and have done wood work and framing. Even I know that this was a poorly braced, I have see that flat steel piece place applied on both block and brick walls as well. But seeing those blocks set vertically floating on nothing gave me an uneasy feeling.
Krystle lime. I haven't been putting any toilet paper down the toilet 2 months. I have went through four bottle of gel Drano. The water was backing up in the tub in the sink in the bathroom. Then I got some really expensive stuff at Lowe's wrapped in plastic bottle that has lie in it. My sump pump also died. I'm going to attempt to change that myself I am female and very broke. The problem that I've been having is that when I flush the toilet it either Spirits out of the wash tub down in the basement or it gurgles. I don't know if the flood had anything to do with that or not. The city has been out having a lot of problems on my street. It's funny when the city was out doing a repair job the water just appeared for my basement which I never thought that would happen being it was up to the second step. I don't know if I can get my hot water tank lit it's been 4 weeks or longer since I've had a hot shower. Cold ones are not fun. What kind of drain cleaner can I get from the plumbers will they just sell it to me. I know last time this happened the snake the main drain and there was nothing which is 6 ft down in the ground. All is it needed was a good Plunge in the wash tub downstairs but being I'm female I'll have to see if I can get one of my guy neighbors to do it because I have no upper body strength. Any advice you can give me I would appreciate it thank you so much
There is a possibility The City Sewer may be the cause of these issues and that is what I suspect. I recommend having a qualified plumber evaluate your entire drainage system and also tell him you suspect the problem could be the City Sewer.
Hello in 2024 from Carolina. These vines are starting to grow on the side of my brick house. Is there any damage that they can do? I mean it looks nice, but was very unexpected. Its nothing like what youve shown in thr video. Again, the house is 100 brick.
My 30w arrives tomorrow! Thanks for the video. I will be measuring the static temps today and outside temps before install. Then measure them after. My house is small like 1,750 sq ft. And attic is only 2 feet tall so this should do the trick! I live in San Diego so plenty of sun. I am planning to have the solar panel face southwest at 45* because the attic doesn’t heat up in summer until afternoon. We will see.
Is the issue with Chlorine or Chloramine? We have a lot of Chloramine in our water in California, a result of bacteria and chlorine use. I have measured it as high as 2.8ppm
My HVAC closet is very similar to this. Does the wood the unit is resting on underneath in the return need to be treated with a mold barrier? Been having a weird smell in my home. Not so much like dirty sock syndrome. Have not been able to successfully pinpoint it. The coil was replaced 6 months ago
Central HVAC Systems are vulnerable to Mold Issues. There are several ways to help mitigate it as well, by using UV Lamps and Damp Rid Buckets. I only use my central system for heat, now that I have mini splits, which are many times more efficient than central systems
Just a reminder: this is 2024; my roof is TILE because it is best for wildfire mitigation (Colorado) ... anyone want to tackle an installation on a tile roof? Didn't think so.
Should the temp be taken with an infrared Thermometer or do we actually need to measure air temp? Cuz my roof on a sunny day measures 130°F in the roof deck at a 90°F ambient temp
Doing a renovation on an older home with no HVAC... Are there any pro(s) or con(s) to putting the HVAC system in a closet vs. the attic?? Noise? Thanks.
I can see the attic from my closet space is that right or should it be covered up, curious if that's why sc keeps running if its trying to cool down attic
Thank you! I graduated from LWMA 1969. Personally I am disgusted that those in power felt the "LWMA" name was no longer appropriate, an insult to those who attended the school as LWMA. Sad that the old headquarters building was replaced; it was a distinct two story red brick structure with real character. I remember having reveille duty where I had to sleep on a bunk in that building and set alarm clock a few minutes before reveille...accomplished by playing a tape recorder track of reveille over all the school's loudspeakers. The only alumni gathering i made was in 1999.
The only down side is cleaning them is a problem, you can wash them but there would be a lot of dust sticked to it. It takes me a few hours to kinda clean them a little bit. Be ready to grab a toothbrush and 2 hours of your time to clean them a little bit.
