And in 2020 they took down the Coca-Cola/Diet Coke 2-sided sign in SoMa b/c the company didn't want to spend advertising dollars on it - preferred to focus on 'digital marketing.' [There is a KQED piece w/ link to a very 1998 short film about the sign called 'Enjoy.'] Whereas, in 2016 NYC gave protected status to their Pepsi-Cola sign in Queens. Similarly, Boston's Citgo sign invKenmore Square was switched to LED & conserved. In 2018 the Boston Landmarks Commission voted to make it a landmark, but then Mayor Marty Walsh vetoed it. However, they struck a deal w/ the new building owners (as of 2016) to keep the sign until 2048, but allowing minor adjustments as needed.
Years ago, in San Diego, I stopped to see/listen to her. I was absolutely enchanted. Being a photographer, I took many photos of her performing. Now, years later, while editing my many thousands of photos, I came across Karla's images. One photo had her name on her cardboard sign. I googled it and found this video. So happy I did! I wonder where she is these days and what she's doing... When something--or someone--touches me deeply, I never forget.

I'm still living in San Francisco and born and raised here and I use to hang around 24th & Mission, Dolores Park and grew up in Noe Valley then my family moved to the Mission District and lived around 18th & Lexington St, and I still remember my Homeboy days and who can't forget and seems like yesterday!
Master Evans was my son's karate instructor. Will still talks about her and his time at Quantum Martial Arts in Seattle. I'm grateful that I was able to give him that and that I found Master Evans. She made a huge difference in his life.
I remember going to Burger Bar when I was a kid. Chuck E Cheese across from the Drive In near Tully and Fontaine road was awesome too. The Capital Flea Market was the best. San Jose isn't the same anymore. Nothing but buildings and shopping centers now. Sad.

Yup I remember catching the Bart train in the early 80s just to shop at the clothing stores on mission just so I could be well fitted. The mission used to be the main street to cruise then it move to broad way. After the 1989 earth shack it changed time changes everything. I still have good ol memories.
Hello! My family has been coming to Dianda's for their famed Fedora rum cake since 1971--fifty-one years. Starting from when my husband and I were walking through Mission Street near corner of 25th Street pushing our newborn son's stroller. We looked through the window glass and were enticed to come in for the stawberry with whipped cream rolls and Napoleons with rum custard. Those days these delicious pastries cost (if I remember correctly about 35 cents maybe.) I will always remember the little old Italian lady who owned and ran the front counter. I can't remember precisely when we were turned on to the Fedora cake, which is rum cake with chocolate mousse filling. Suffice to say that every birthday, anniversary, holiday, special and not-so-special occasion that called for a cake--was ALWAYS celebrated with a FEDORA. The years have flown by (1971 to 2022) and Dianda's chocolate rum cake remains a staple of my family. That newborn in his stroller is now 51 years old, and he brought home a Fedora rum cake 2 nights ago--for no special reason other than because he wanted one for me and him. I just finished a slice and it's 1:13 am on July 16, 2022. Dianda's chocolate rum cake is the best tasting in the world. It's been our family tradition for 51 years.
