I wish I could see this game's graphics on a CRT or with a CRT shader
@BasementBrothers
@BasementBrothers День назад
Well, you can if you buy a CRT monitor for your PC and then watch this video on it. :) One thing you have to remember though, is that these games were not made to be played on a CRT TV, but rather a CRT computer monitor. The resolution on those monitors was actually pretty sharp, and didn't really look all that much different from the way it looks on a modern display. Even back then all the dithering was quite visible.
@Halfbit_0

@@BasementBrothers That's surprising to hear considering all the packing of all those distant color combos in the dithering. I thought for sure it would be done that way to blend for different colors

its always weird growing up with MIDI music being the bottom scale, lowest file size stuff you can find(so most of what you'd download before high speed internet became commonplace), and then getting into retro games where for a time, MIDI was the top of the line musical format, to the point where you'd often have to buy a separate module for it

Why does it seem like so few games from the PC-98/PC-88 were ported to consoles? I know they were sometimes ported to other computers but doesn't seem like there are a lot of console versions and was just curious why
@BasementBrothers
@BasementBrothers 6 дней назад
Many were ported to consoles and many weren't. For each title you could look at the reasons why. As for why there were many PC-98/88 games ported to other PC's, that's simple: because it was easier. PC-88 games could be easily ported to the FM-7 or X1 (or more powerful PCs) without redrawing the graphics. Same with porting PC-98 games to the FM Towns or X68000. For console ports, you would have had to completely remake the graphics for the lower resolutions on consoles. On the other hand, developers were used to having to do that for console ports at the time for even porting a game from the Genesis to SNES for example, since the graphic capabilities were so different. And porting PC-88 games to MSX was similarly difficult due to the graphical differences. So when a developer really wanted to do it of course they could make it happen. But I think still the answer to your question is that it is way easier to port a game when you can just reuse the exact same graphics as the original.

Some say "this game doesn't seem interesting because it's just a Legend of Zelda-ripoff'c, I say it doesn't look interesting because the fighting game sequences seem to rely on nothing but repetitive spamming of the same attacks just to exploit the AI:s weaknesses. We are not the same. Suffice to say I feel the first game seemed like a far more compelling prospect because we're actually seeing variety in environments and a more ambitious plot- here not only is the world we explore smaller (not neccessarily a sin, a smaller scale game revolving around a hub-area can be fun too), but the scales feel much less exciting and it doesn't look like they use the smaller scales to enhance the character writing and let us get any closer to the characters we adventured with in the past game. I gotta be honest, besides what looks like a higher frame-rate and maybe more polished puzzles, I struggle to see what's more appealing about this game than the last one... but I also just saw the video and didn't play it, so maybe that will simply have to be a mystery we leave unsolved. An interesting look into this game anyway- I wonder if it was made smaller because sales of the first one wasn't a success? Did the devs move on to other games, or was this also their final game, not just the final game in the Sword Dancer series?
@BasementBrothers
@BasementBrothers 6 дней назад
Thanks for the well thought-out comment. Yeah, you're right that's a better criticism of the game. You can tell at least they tried to make a good fighting game (for 1994 anyway) by adding lots of moves. But they didn't spend that much time tuning the balance and AI, and making sure there were actual good use cases for these moves. Thus allowing the game to be easily exploited by spamming attacks and cheap strategies. These were common issues in generic 16bit fighting games though. There were only a few like Capcom and SNK that could make truly tighter fighting games at the time, so I can't really fault the game too much for it. The original Sword Dancer actually was a modest success on the PC-98. I'd say the reason why the second is short is because they spent so much time on the fighting game aspect, the graphics and animation that they didn't have much time to actually make the game long. Yes, the staff who made this game went on to make plenty of other TGL titles before the company really hit hard times in about 2002 with Farland Symphony.

This is as good as it's going to look on a flat screen for sure, using a retrotink 4K as the upscaler. Some prefer CRT's of course, but realistically it's not going to make that huge a difference. I guess the look of old PC games just isn't for you.

It's such a shame the fallacious mindset that spreads among collectors of "If it's dumped/made publicly available, the value depreciates". This unfortunate and obviously incorrect train of thought is responsible for an untold amount of hoarded games that might otherwise be, you know, NOT lost forever.

Do we absolutely need a second fdd drive to install the game?? I am currently using a PC9821 NA13 laptop, I have the chance to buy the complete in big box game but I want to be able to install it.
@BasementBrothers
@BasementBrothers 7 дней назад
That's a good question. I can't recall if in the manual it describes a one floppy drive install process or not. Of course the easiest way to get around it nowadays is to just skip the official install process and get a pre-installed userdisk from someone online. You can just modify it to have the right CD-rom driver and drive letters for your system.
